The United States was the copper-bottomed leader of the financial world for the better part of a century, and the phrase As sound as a dollar was understood by all to mean that our currency was the standard for the world. Of course, that was before Obama took office.

I am leaving the cold weather here in Texas and heading to the even more frigid climes of New Jersey. So get that homework in before I head to the airport at 11 a.m. central time.

There were copper bottom tympani in horse platoons
Thundering, thundering all along the way.
Double bell euphoniums and big bassoons,
Each bassoon having it's big, fat say!--Lyrical excerpt from Meredith Wilson's "Seventy-six Trombones" Read more: Soundtrack Artists - Seventy-six Trombones Lyrics | MetroLyrics

Not exactly topical, but here's how they would have to clean the bottoms of ships back in the day:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Careening. A much more frequent event prior to copper-bottoms.
When a copper-bottomed ship REALLY got going out in a great breeze, the ship would often be so keeled over in the effort that her copper would show on the high (windward) side.

Oh, you gonna take me home tonight?
Oh, down beside the red firelight
Oh, you gonna let it all hang out
Copper-bottomed girls, you make the rocking world go round!
