Vicious Dog Drama In Pontiac; Cops Shoot German Shepherd In Early Morning Showdown (2nd Dog Sought)
Deadline Detroit ^ | February 7th, 2014

A German shepherd suspected in a series of vicious and unprovoked attacks on people in Pontiac this week died in a face-off with Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies in Auburn Hills early Friday, Eric D. Lawrence reports in the Free Press.

The dog was one of two now-dead German shepherds that authorities said had terrorized residents and emergency workers Wednesday and Thursday. In one attack Thursday morning, the dogs bit and dragged a 56-year-old Pontiac woman down a city street. She was rescued by a passing motorist.

The Oakland Press reports a sheriff’s deputy shot one of the dogs when both charged him after the attack on the 56-year-old woman. The second dog escaped and was hit by a car while it was being pursued. The missing dog was later shot by a deputy in a wooded area near Perry Street and Giddings Road just after 2 a.m. Friday after it was initially spotted in Auburn Hills and unsuccessful attempts to capture it were made.

Dustin Blitchok writes that when Maria Gialdi, the 56-year-old victim, got out of her car on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon, she felt sorry for the two German shepherds she saw trotting down the road toward her. The feeling didn’t last.

“They looked at me, we made eye contact and they just made a beeline toward me. They just started attacking me and I started yelling for help. Nobody came to help. The next door neighbor was actually shoveling snow. He didn’t even look up,” said Gialdi, 53, who received about 50 stitches on the puncture wounds at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland. Plastic surgery will likely be needed.

“Once I get to know the dog, I am fine with German Shephards. They are loyal and very protective. I have also been bitten by an overprotective German Shepherd.

I have a great deal of respect for them and approach carefully.

The only times I have bitten by a dog were my own through misdirected aggression. All of them were (are) German shepherds. It hurts even if they don't break skin.

They’re called Land Sharks for good reason. Mine devoured an entire book! ;-)

"I knew a man who raised massive German Shephards for sale overseas. They were much bigger than 70 or 80 pounds."

My old dog Timber's father was imported from East Germany shortly after the wall came down, and was a massive dog. Timber himself was a lean and muscular 110-115 lbs. Compare the size of his torso with mine...

One, a male, when I was in law school. He was allowed to run and did not like it when I rode my motorcycle by his house on the way to and from class.

My Great Dane, at 110 lb., a bit small for the breed, is named Canute, for the only Danish king of England. He’s very friendly, just a bit cautious in approaching strangers. His only problem with the UPS man is he loves to turn the packages into dog toys.

Keep books out of a dog’s reach. They can shred them like confetti! :(

Last year a single bite on her hand from a Jack Russell put Mrs. L in the hospital for a week. Dog bites, any animal bite really, is not to be trifled with. We learned that the hard way.

You can be more casual with a Dane, their antagonistic effectiveness being incited by far more direct threats. Also their mere size does a lot more to intimidate potential bad guys, so they only need to growl and show their teeth in more threatening situations. That means they are a lot less in the way of four footed lawsuits waiting to happen.

Mine just likes to tug on your hand to get your attention but strangers don’t know that and jerk away.

Mine does it to me a couple of times per day when he wants a treat or wants me to go outside with him.

Both of mine, as puppies and adolescent dogs, loved to start with a book’s spine and go up. Big problem, since the smaller is 85 lb.

Oh agreed.

I was at the vet a long time ago and this gentleman walks out of the back with a huge male shepherd in a Hannibal Lecter dog muzzle. It was a brown leather muzzle, I had never seen one of these before.

This dog proceeded to bark extremely loudly and very rapidly at some kids who were about 10-15 feet away, and they ran and hid behind a Coke machine.

The size of this dog, the way it barked and that muzzle just scared the crap out of me and them too apparently.

Mine is barkless. My girl has never once barked or howled. I like that quality in a GSD.

And even when she is a bad dog, I find I cannot stay mad at her. She has that sweet expression that just makes you want to make up.

A great breed, despite their faults!

How do you feel about Great Danes?

Any big dog makes me nervous. I think the largest dog I have been near in the past few years was a golden retriever, and I did not touch it.

“Any big dog makes me nervous.”

That’s the beauty of a Dane. They intimidate by size alone, even though most of them are very low key affectionate lovers. You get the intimidation without the antagonism; hence, very rare lawsuits and mostly happy neighbors and UPS delivery persons. My Dane’s about to pest me by rubbing his head against me the way a cat does. He doesn’t sleep with me only because the Pitador has already spoken for the available bed space. Yes, I am perversely attracted to big dogs.

Mine is just like that too. So sweet and so good, and her face is just so, so friendly and loving.

But unlike any other dog I have ever known in my life, she talks constantly.

Not barking, but a whine of contemplation or long, drawn out groans which she sometimes does while yawning which is just hilarious.

When she rides in the car with me she will talk the entire time, there and back.

My lady GSD is without a doubt the smartest dog I have ever met in my life, and I really think that our meeting each other was a blessing from God to us both.

She was in need, and so was I.

They are part of the oversized contingent. No Shepherd should be more than 90 lbs fed properly. They are not meant to be “huge” dogs despite myth, but lithe and agile as well as suitably powerful. They are shepherding dogs who need to turn on a dime.
