Vicious Dog Drama In Pontiac; Cops Shoot German Shepherd In Early Morning Showdown (2nd Dog Sought)
Deadline Detroit ^ | February 7th, 2014

A German shepherd suspected in a series of vicious and unprovoked attacks on people in Pontiac this week died in a face-off with Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies in Auburn Hills early Friday, Eric D. Lawrence reports in the Free Press.

The dog was one of two now-dead German shepherds that authorities said had terrorized residents and emergency workers Wednesday and Thursday. In one attack Thursday morning, the dogs bit and dragged a 56-year-old Pontiac woman down a city street. She was rescued by a passing motorist.

The Oakland Press reports a sheriff’s deputy shot one of the dogs when both charged him after the attack on the 56-year-old woman. The second dog escaped and was hit by a car while it was being pursued. The missing dog was later shot by a deputy in a wooded area near Perry Street and Giddings Road just after 2 a.m. Friday after it was initially spotted in Auburn Hills and unsuccessful attempts to capture it were made.

Dustin Blitchok writes that when Maria Gialdi, the 56-year-old victim, got out of her car on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon, she felt sorry for the two German shepherds she saw trotting down the road toward her. The feeling didn’t last.

“They looked at me, we made eye contact and they just made a beeline toward me. They just started attacking me and I started yelling for help. Nobody came to help. The next door neighbor was actually shoveling snow. He didn’t even look up,” said Gialdi, 53, who received about 50 stitches on the puncture wounds at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland. Plastic surgery will likely be needed.

an enraged German Shepherd is a terrifying animal

I'm not a fan of German Shepherds. I've had several bad experiences with them.

When I was about five I was in a store and when I walked around this counter I came face to face with a German Shepard. We were nose to nose. I screamed. The dog licked my face. I followed it around the store until time to leave. Every time we went back the dog was waiting for me and we walked together all over until time to leave.

Once I get to know the dog, I am fine with German Shephards. They are loyal and very protective. I have also been bitten by an overprotective German Shepherd.

I have a great deal of respect for them and approach carefully.

To me they are the only dog that exists.

I just absolutely love them. Just the finest animal that I have ever known in my life.

The article fails to mention how many shots were fired.

The only breed ever to bite me in anger was a GSD. I’ve run into few really friendly ones, while I’ve run into several friendly Dobermans and Rotties.

Any dog that has gone feral is possibly dangerous.

A good GS is circumspect of anyone outside her family. She takes time to understand you are trusted by hers and then they warm up.

My best dog ever was like this. As a co-worker said, who met her only once to help me move, “scary when meeting her, but after a while she was the nicest dog!” She gave him her pork chop to throw for her.

Agreed. But I’m not blind to the aggression problems that have and continue to exist. Not quite as bad as people think, because it has been probably the most popular breed in the world for decades upon decades. But still something to be watchful of.

A good Shepherd is the greatest. A bad one is a terror.

BTW, which ones bit you just for fun? I’d be more afraid of them! ;-)

Look at the numbers since the ‘20s, dogs in candid pix from all over the world, and likely they are the most popular breed ever everywhere. That’s because they are and were so useful, and impressive.

A nice short barreled shotgun with number 4 target loads would be the perfect defensive weapon in this circumstance.

Yes, you never know for sure. One of the reasons I will never go out in public without a dog on a lead. Either because of my dog, or the other dog. Anyone who insists their dog would never do anything, is not very responsible.

As the last few corpses lay rotting on the slimy thoroughfare The shutters lifted in inches in Temperance Building High on Poacher's Hill And red, mutant eyes gaze down on Hunger City No more big wheels Fleas the size of rats sucked on rats the size of cats And ten thousand peoploids split into small tribes Coverting the highest of the sterile skyscrapers Like packs of dogs assaulting the glass fronts of Love-Me Avenue Ripping and rewrapping mink and shiny silver fox, now legwarmers Family badge of sapphire and cracked emerald Any day now The Year of the Diamond Dogs

My dog is very friendly but strangers don’t know that and he wants to pull on their fingers so they’ll get down and greet him properly. The natural instinct of people is to jerk away but a proper introduction avoids misunderstandings.

My UPS man knows my dogs well and gets right down on one knee to greet them.
