What about something like this:
He can take notes for things like To Do lists, things about Dad, etc. and keep the tablet in the portfolio pocket.

The Pelican Progear hardback case with iPad insert is slick... and not the least bit "girly".

As you’re asking...
I use a green plastic shopping bag. The cheap kind shops give you if you haven’t got a bag with you.
But I do excel in the art of scruffy.

I found that a WWII canvas map case is exactly the right size for an iPad. (You _did_ get him an iPad, right?)
PM me and I'll mail you mine.
Also recommended (because I use it all the time) is the iPad sleeve from Saddleback Leather.
Comes with a 100 year warranty promising "they'll fight over it when you're dead", and is guaranteed premium leather that looks better the more it's used/abused.

BTW: while I keep the iPad in a leather sleeve, I usually carry it and the rest of my stuff in a
canvas messenger bag from
DPXGear.com, the product line from Robert Young Pelton, author of
The World's Most Dangerous Places, a tourist guide to everywhere in the world you absolutely shouldn't go.
For more formal occasions, I use a pseudo-leather messenger bag imprinted with the Jack Daniels logo.

If he is a reader and listens to music, hands down kindle wins.
And the reason is not only price reliability etc. BUT they have added the same system they use for physical music sales to physical book sales.
Buy a CD from amazon you get a digital copy uploaded for free to your amazon cloud which is hooked directly into your Kindle.
And now they are starting to add the same for books though it seems most digital copies of books will cost you 99 cents after you have paid for the physical copy.
Also kindle will work with several different book formats without adding any apps.
Also you can have multiple kindles on one account and they all share the media bought for that account. So you don't have to buy multiple copies of books etc. Our family has 3 of them and we never have problems they work well and I would be lost without mine.

I have a leather case for my iPad Mini and that's how I carry it. No need for anything else.
I take mine with me everywhere.

Get him a nice black leather cover. He will carry it in his hand. The cover is to keep it from getting busted when he tosses his backpack on it.
