I want to replace my old, very gunked up Dell, and would like to have W7, if possible
The most recent laptop purchase in our household was from:
It is a beauty.
They have desktops and your choice of an operating system.
My sister has Windows 8.1 and it’s a nightmare. It regularly removes her eMail program from the desktop and it takes the help desk an hour to find it and put it back. Then, when she turns on the computer again, it’s gone.
It is the opposite of intuitive.
My husband buys ASUS computers......
Have bought about 20 Dells over the years for my employees and self. All have worked fine. Typing on a Dell XP right now.
Just bought an ASUS T100 Tablet with attached/removable keyboard for $350 with 64 GB semiconductor instead of hard drive. Came with windows office and windows 8. No DVD drive. Networked to my XP to us its DVD drive for loading some software.
It is a very impressive little machine. Not slow at all. Can use with external HDMI monitor and USB keyboard. Big use for me is traveling and remote desktop to my XP machine although can use the ASUS as a standalone if have too.
Probably HP. Microcenter is always selling decent HP computers for $300 - $500. Often these are unused refurbs, basically same as new condition.
I can’t stand the Dells now. My company has them and they are full of problems.
I just purchased a new Lenovo from TigerDirect.com with Windows 7 Pro and they gave me a disk for Windows 8 pro if i want to install it later.
Also check out Newegg.com for good prices.
My nephew took his Asus to Afghanistan and back and it’s rolling right along - so he loves them.
Salamat
I bought my first ASUS a month ago - an Ultrabook - and absolutely love it!
Construction quality equal or better than Apple and has a higher resolution screen (Full HD “1920”). Even the packaging was first class.
Got a great deal at Best Buy on this discontinued model (UX-302) with i5 processor - blazing fast.
Bottom line, the ASUS ultrabooks are simply fantastic and very highly recommended.
I bought a nice HP tower on sale from WalMart for $498 and I am very happy with it. However, the very last thing I would do is to buy an HP Printer. The LAST thing.
I never could get it to work with Airprint from my iPhone, or even via wireless with one of it’s own wireless laptops!
Even copying something was a paint. They are trash.
I bought an Epson Workforce 545 that is seamless for everything and does airprint and wireless with any laptop or iPhone device.

...sounds familiar, bought a 7 box from the HP Direct site for a BIG discount and paid $70 for the extended “show up at the house” warranty. Can update to 8 at anytime. Staying away from the awful reviews of the latest printers. Have a Workforce from Epson and none of the low ink games that people complain about from the HP printer software. Still using XP on the laptop until March and then maybe going Linux!
ymmv
Dell has berry berry good to me.
I second the vote for Mac.
I have a macbook air. I love it. Macs are bullet proof and very easy to use. You could even install windows on a mac.
Mac is expensive though. You can buy two windows pcs for the price of one mac.
If you are budget minded, you can buy a tablet pc or a chrome book.
I’m sure he took better care of it than my son did of his, which he broke just around our house and his school!
Get a Mac.
My Dell 4300 (2001), using as a backup server now.
Dell Inspiron 1500 Laptop XP (need for work) since 2005
Dell Vostro 1000 Laptop W7 daughters since 2006 High school and college. She does graphic designs with it with upgraded memory.
Dell Inspiron Desktop Quad CPU 2009 Love it
Had great customer service through the years.
I guess I have to say, go Dell!
It’s going to be a bloodbath. 15K Dell employees are getting the ax starting this week. ;(

Could not be happier. Bought 2 desktop towers over the past 2 years (his & hers) hers just 3 months ago. Both with Windows 7 pro.
Asus Desktop, Intel Core i7-4770, 16GB RAM, 2TB Hard Drive - Came with Windows 7
