MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -
A Rutherford County elementary school teacher faces animal cruelty charges for shooting her neighbor's cat.
Katherine Duke, a fourth grade teacher at Wilson Elementary School in Murfreesboro, admitted to police she shot the cat Thursday afternoon because she was tired of it using her children's sandbox as a litter box.
The cat's owner rushed it to a veterinarian where the animal had to be euthanized.
Duke, 41, was charged with animal cruelty and booked into the Rutherford County.
She has since been released on a $2,250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court March 4.

Very well said.
>> Animals cannot be murdered, for murder only applies to humans, as we bear the image of God to claim otherwise is to demean mankind.
>
> And what an ugly image we have when we kill pets because of easily remedied nuisances. Id say that kind of conduct demeans mankind.
I didn’t say that we bore the perfect image, the fall of mankind has profound impact on the inborn image of God we bear... But God still saw fit to save us — “while we were yet sinners” — and THAT is something that ought to be respected.
Thank you.
People who think it’s okay to kill a cat because it poops in a stupid sandbox creep me out.
Toxoplasmosis.
Not guilty.
Toxoplasmosis.
Wow that sounds extremely ignorant! So you justify killing an innocent animal? I am surprised you own a animal talking like that, did you ever think maybe she should could have put something over the sandbox? So you think resolving an issue is just to kill? WOW
Well maybe you should come back as a cat
We have kitties, and I ask our neighbors if they are crossing over and being a nuisance. No problem and her children love em.
BUT, if they were a problem, I’d buy and request that the neighbors use my paintball gun to sting em. That sends a strong message without killing em.
I can guarantee that more animals then that one kitty are using the sandbox as a toilet. (probably including her kids)
Both were irresponsible. She is a bad mother if she didn’t keep the kid’s sandbox covered...even if that cat wasn’t able to mess in it there are more cats in the world. The cat owner is a bad owner to allow the cat to be loose to keep messing in the sandbox.
Oh and by the way how would you feel if your dog some how got lose and pooped on someones front yard and got shot? Would you be talking the same way?
“I thought digging down into the sand and finding cat crap was a rite of passage for all kids growing up.”
Me too.
Yes I own animals, and yes I am a responsible pet/animal owner. There are at least two chain link fences between my locked kennels and dog runs and my property line that are secure at all times. I have large animals too and have shot dogs for chasing my livestock many times. Will I shoot them again?? Hell yes and you would too after the first $3k vet bill when some stupid owners dog runs a trailer load of expensive horses and mules through a fence cutting them up. I live in the real world where we are held responsible for our animals. If I see a dog harassing or chasing my horses, mules, or cattle I reach for a rifle. There are no second chances and the law is on my side. The pet owner is the one who is responsible for keeping their pet home.
I do not get how people value their pets so little that they would let them run wild and take a chance on them finding trouble or being hit by a car. That is the irresponsible pet owner. When these free running pets find trouble and pay the price the owners always want to blame someone else. BS, it is their own fault their pets are gone.
She forgot the last two parts, shovel and shut up!
I have lived here for 25 years..and I am sure they wonder from time to time why one goes missing.
I'll never tell...and my humming birds appreciate it..
Gotta agree with that . If you're going to do something, do it right.
“She is a bad mother if she didnt keep the kids sandbox covered”
Bad? I don’t think so. The pet owner, who allowed their animal to roam over property they did not own is the “bad mother”.
The point is there are other cats, birds, etc. in the world; so many ways to get a sandbox contaminated unless she is going to guard that sandbox 24/7 she needs to have it covered to protect her children.
I said the cat owner was wrong as well.
