The Deer around here are a cute but greedy menace! I’ve tried lion urine spray to no avail! All my tomatoes and string beans gone!
I feel fortunate, that we don’t have to worry about deer. We do however have those bushy tailed rats called squirrels.
We catch them in live traps and release them on our land about 15 miles away where there is enough forage to keep them from wanting to return.
Two methods that have worked for me to keep moose, elk and deer out of the garden-
Have a guy pee around the perimeter of the garden, or have him pee into plastic bottles that you have poked holes in the top near the neck of the bottle (to release the scent), cap the bottles and hang around the borders of the garden. The latter lasts longer. Never!, ever!, use female pee! It really makes them cranky. They will rip up the garden instead. I learned that the hard way.
The other method is to use fishing line instead of (expensive) fencing at 2’and 5’ from the ground, around the whole garden. The deer bump it, get spooked by the “invisible” barrier and move on. The moose have not breached it, though I doubt they would notice. No elk have gone through, yet, either. I lost some hummingbirds to the line last year, though. I thought the idea was insane. It has worked for 4 years now. My husband forgets most of the time to “water” around the garden for me. (grin)
