If you live anywhere around Huntsville, Texas, including all of Houston, make a day trip to Huntsville to have burgers at Mr. Hamburger. It is a privately owned hamburger restaurant and in all my 80 years, it is the finest tasting meat, course ground instead of mush, and burger in the entire world. Mr. Hamburger is on 11th street exit from Hwy. 45 and that street goes into the center of the town (it's not a far distance), past the courthouse and Mr. Hamburger is on the right I believe. I say I believe because the burgers were bought there and brought to the house where I was.

The person who bought the burgers apologized for buying the ones he bought - he didn't mean to buy the “King Kong” ones. You would have to have a double wide mouth to put a King Kong in your mouth - I had to eat it with a fork and it was so fine I can't describe it adequately.

I'm putting the menu on here so you can get an idea of what each burger is. Huntsville, Texas, is the home of Texas State Prison Huntsville, the largest one in Texas (can you say state executions). It's also home to Sam Houston State University, and that's why the names of these burgers are what they are. “Old Sparky” is the name of the electric chair that was used before chemicals took its place. In the early days, Texans were called Texicans.

I don't know the cost of these burgers and it doesn't matter because it is worth getting a loan at the bank to eat one. I'm putting the link on here so you can read on their website about the long history of Mr. Hamburger and the rest that is on there.

If you go there, on Hwy. 45 going north to Huntsville, before you get into Huntsville, you will see the multi-story tall white statue of Sam Houston towering over even the trees. You can go see the house where he lived after being president of the state. I think the title was president then before it joined the union (I see joining the union as a sad day now). :o)

This is the link to their home page http://mr-hamburger.com/home

I copied the menu from their website:

1. Original Single meat, lettuce, tomato, onions, and pickles
2. Killer Burger Double meat, double cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, and jalapeños
3. King Kong Triple meat, triple cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, and jalapeños
4. Old Sparky Deep-fried beef patty topped with lettuce, pickles, special Ranch and “Texas-in-July” sauces
5. Professor Single meat, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, and “Greek Fusion” sauce
6. Warden Single meat, grilled onions and mushrooms topped with Swiss cheese
7. Texican Single meat, lettuce, guacamole, bacon, and “Southwest” sauce
8. Hornet Single meat, chili, cheddar-monterrey cheese, onion, and Frito chips

TOPPINGS
Hot Toppings Bacon, Grilled Onions, Grilled Mushrooms, Chili
Cheese American, Swiss, Pepper Jack, Shredded Cheddar-Monterrey
Sauces Mustard, Mayo, Ketchup, Parmesan Ranch, Southwest, Texas-in-July (Hot), Greek Fusion, Roasted-Red Pepper & Garlic, Guacamole

Great posting about some history of the Huntsville area and Mr. Hamburger. It’s after 2am and that menu listing just caused me to salivate! I really miss the flame broiled burgers and grilled, buttered buns that used to be common.

Sam Houston was President of the Republic of Texas.

Aside... Back in ‘50s the family went to Galveston every year for two weeks. We usually stopped at the Huntsville State Park for a break. One year, we filled a grocery sack with some of the Spanish moss from there. .....We lived on a corner and had about a dozen mimosa trees along the side street. We hung pieces of the moss in every tree. It was STILL living in those trees 20 years later.

I enjoy your postings.
