Stather's friends were waiting on the canyon floor for him to complete his second jump when he never landed, azfamily.com reports.
The friends hiked out of the canyon and found his body about 2,000 feet from the top and called the police, according to a Coconino County Sheriff's Office spokesperson. Authorities said Stather was wearing a wing suit and parachute popular among those who do the activity.

Semi controlled plummeting, I’d say.

Just happened to see a documentary on base jumping called
Twenty Seconds of Joy. If you get a chance to see it, it's very interesting. In looking up someone listed at the end of the film, I ran into the
Base Fatality List ... no idea so many have died doing this. The list has the reason(s) why the jump(s) failed (if known) which gives a real insight into base jumping.

Keep reading, his body was found at the top of the cliff, 2000 ft from the jump off point. No, he wasn't at the top of the cliff, he was 2000 feet from it. He apparently expected to travel more than 2000 feet from the top, down to where his friends waited. Gravity and rock cut his journey short.

Base jumping, an activity that involves jumping from fixed objects using wing suits and parachutes to break the fall, has resulted in at least 200 deaths.that's a lot of deaths --

So to summarize: thrill-seeker flings himself off high place, dies on impact with large fixed planet. Not really much news there, except maybe for the physics-impaired.

Done properly, it’s called proximity flying. It’s the closest thing to human flight. Granted- one has to fall, to fly.
The title of the video contains a rather coarse expletive.
10:31 in length.
Enjoy!

I have never done either, But I’d skydive or base jump before I would bungee jump. I need to control my destiny.

I think it means that he jumped but never got enough air beneath his wings for some reason and he just went straight down.

200 deaths.
With 6-7 billion on the planet, that’s not even a sneeze.

I took it to mean 2000 feet horizontally since they mentioned that they hiked out of the canyon.

But how many of the 6 to 7 billion on the planet are base jumpers???
very few — and base jumping is relatively new.
To: F15Eagle
Well probably the cliff was not vertical and doc didn't quite clear all of the cliff wall
Ouch? Might not have felt a thing especially going head first. Might have gotten out the “oh” but never got out the “s***” as his last comment.

Still nothing to want to run out and make laws about. Let people live free and /or die if they feel like it.

Who is crying for new laws.
The Law of Gravity is sufficient and carries its own enforcement mechanism that appears to be working only too well.
