Word For The Day, Monday,1/27/14
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
casuistic; adj.
1. pertaining to casuists or casuistry. 2. oversubtle; intellectually dishonest; sophistical: casuistic distinctions. Also, cas·u·is·ti·cal.
Etymology: casuist 1609, "one who studies and resolves cases of conscience," from Fr. casuiste, from L. casus (see case (1)). Often in a sinister or contemptuous sense. Casuistry is first attested 1725. McCormick, urged a more historical approach to natural law, and with it a new appreciation of and fresh ways of approaching the principle of double effect, casuistic reasoning, and weighing various goods and ends in practical matters. The controversies of post-conciliar theology by Hinze, Bradford E. / National Catholic Reporter For many observers the whole unseemly farce that evening in Munich had been stage-managed, written and directed by casuistic promoter Frank Warren, who would match flailing frogs for a fight if some idiot would buy a ticket. If this was a soap the writer would be committed! by Birmingham Mail (England)

Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Abuse of drugs, legal or illegal, and alcohol are choices someone makes. They take that risk without regard to how it may affect their family members. Most addicts are a continual source of grief to family members because they refuse to get help or the family supports them only to have them relapse. I have sympathy for the family, but not the abuser. They made the choice - the family just has to live with the consequences.
Rules for some, but not for you! lol
Tom Cruise has been fighting that for years.
Except, when they are young, those choices are not ...informed, and those deaths, are as random, as a car accident.
they begin telling kids in Kindergarten that drugs are bad - every year they are told that in school. They see it on billboards and PSAs on tv. Parents tell them - they know they are doing something wrong and possibly dangerous. Sure kids do dumb things all the time but you can’t say they don’t know - and it isn’t as random as a car accident. they don’t “accidently” steal Mom’s medicine or mix cough medicine with soda - they don’t accidently buy heroin or possibly pot laced with something.
Well, spilling anythong acidic liquid on somethong you’re wearing is gonna casuistic holes wear you don’t want them.....
And, I’m sorry. But Dave and SG...were right.
I thought as conservatives, , we believed in the saying, “let he who is without sin, cast the first stone”....
I Don’t know what it is to be perfect, so, I am sure I didn’t get an invite to that meeting.....
Compassion is a grace and a virtue.
Yeah, they do....
Driving recklessly is dangerous.,,kids are stupid.
They have a million PSAs about lung cancer, yet we still sell cigarettes.
And, to be perfectly honest, death by auto is far more prevalent than OD.
This is about, compassion, and non-judgement. Which was Daves point.
Sorry..i agree.
And they tell kids how horrible pot is, and when they find out it isn’t, they question what they’ve been told about “harder” drugs as well.
because the ill effects of pot are not evident in the short term, so yeah, not so much differnet from kids who are told not to text and drive or not to drink and drive, tend to not believe that it’s dangerous to do so when they have done it to no ill effect, until the time they do and they kill themselves and other innocents.
No, I merely think that we shouldn't celebrate the death of others.
Or use it as an occasion to remind ourselves how much better we are.
Well said Dave.
I admit it. I am not the wonderfully compassionate Christian that the rest of you are. If someone engages in known risky behavior that ends up in an entirely predictable bad result, my reaction is SHOULDA THOUGHTA THAT. Is that cheering the bad result? not at all, i am sorry they are dead and their family is grieving, but it is acknowledging the foreseeability of the bad result and the russian roulette they engaged in and lost.
and is my attitude one that i am better and this couldn’t happen to me or my child? not remotely. if it happened to me, i would certainly do everything in my power to get my child out of whatever risky behavior they were engaged in and were i unsuccessful and a bad result happened, i would understand perfectly someone else having the same attitude that i do.
I don't understand the selfish need of a drug user to risk so much to get high.
I had my moment with pot, but it has been a long time since I have had any. But that is not really relevant.
The point is that the “education” about the dangers of drugs that we give to children is undermined when things are exaggerated.
Pot is being legalized, so the argument that it causes you to go into a seedy criminal underworld is also disappearing.
The larger point is that we all face compulsions (to sin). Some people are stronger than others in resisting these compulsions. Be happy if you are one of those.
There is a certain symmetry to your argument. I will give you that.
Are you suggesting that when someone isn’t shocked or overly saddened by an illegal and stupid choice a drug user makes which results in their death that is is because we think we are better than them? Are you proud of your choice to get a degree over someone who stands around in a ghetto who did not? You both had a free public education (unless you went to Catholic School but you get where I’m going with this) - you both had the choice to work hard to get through college but they chose not to do the work, you did. So your choice provides you with the finances to support your family - and probably his also. But your choice was a good one and you should be happy you didn’t make his choice, right? So how is that so different from someone saying “I’m glad my child didn’t choose to take drugs and end up overdosing”?
Pot is being legalized because democrats are appealing to their base. Pot smoking is rampant in black communities. Of course there are successful people who pay their bills and smoke recreationally - but in poorer communities it is a daily thing - money going to pot instead of to homes or bills or even food. Young men who have grown up hiding from any need to succeed by getting high every day - and while it isn’t addictive in the sense of heroin or even alcohol, it becomes an escape from their lives and responsibilities and obama is encouraging that behavior by condoning it.
