I know. Isn’t it amazing? And for us it was a cold day. And sound really travels in cold air. Still, never heard it coming.

Most people cannot judge how fast a train is moving- very deceptive, many people are in the cemetery to prove it. I bet they were trying to get a picture that looked like he was about to get ran over and...

If you are actually standing on the train tracks couldn’t you “feel” the trains vibration?

They have an Amtrak station in Auburn and that’s where I figured he was when hit but the report says, “The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. near C Street Southwest and Eighth Street.”
The guy had to have jumped a fence to get on the tracks at that location. So he was literally terminally stupid.

And sound really travels in cold air. Still, never heard it coming. Sound travels more slowly in cold air than warm as discussed here.

As a very young man somewhere between 14 and 16 I remember an evening walk to my girlfriends house. She lived some 6 or 8 miles away. I was upset about some family issue I don't remember now, just that I wanted to runaway.
I stood in front of her house contemplating the pebbles thrown at her window and decided against calling on her. My walk home however involved crossing the proverbial railroad tracks once again and this time it coordinated with a passing freight train. I did my best to run along with it and try to grab hold but it was fast, big and very scary. I touched it, but I had a lot of respect for it's churning wheels just inches away from my legs.
I gave up and walked on home exhausted knowing full well I'd be grounded for whatever it was prompted the whole thing as well as being out too late. I think I was reading Huck Finn in those days, but I can say now I'm glad I chickened out and didn't hitch that ride decades ago.
I'm very proud of my parents and myself for the way I turned out. Getting caught up with a train at that point would've changed Lord knows a bunch.

Why didn’t the train swerve to miss him?

Instead of mocking him, I will pray that he rests in peace. Agreed. I've always notice that when the scummiest of liberal politicians dies, the overwhelming tone on the thread usually is something like "my mother told me if I didn't have anything nice to say..." or "we're better than D.U."...which is fine. But, when a story like this hits, people say whatever they want & joke about the deceased.
Why the difference?
