Trains - especially Amtrak - travel very quietly and very fast nowadays. You never hear them until they are right up on you.
When I was a kid I used to walk the train tracks. You could hear trains coming a mile away.
Not anymore.

Click through to the article at kirotv.com. Pretty flat and open country, hard to miss that big train coming.
Must be more to the story.

My pal and I were snowshoeing on winter day. We came to a short railroad bridge. Started crossing. Half way across - HHHHOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRNNNNNNN!
We looked back here was an ore train. Where in the world did that come from. You wouldn’t think a giant train could sneak up on you but I’m here to tell you they can. (and kinda lucky to be here to tell ya.)

He had eyes only for her—so he didn’t hear the train a’coming.

I remember walking along some train tracks as a teen, heading out to a sledding hill (actually the earthen slope from an overpass). Anyway, about half way there, I looked over my shoulder to see a big honking freight train bearing down on the three of us. Didn’t hear it coming, and I didn’t see a even hint of it a few minutes before when I had looked back to check.
We were lucky enough to be on open rail, so we just scrambled off onto one side. But man, it was a good couple of minutes before any of us felt like getting back on the tracks.
