Should you be in the unfortunate position of being in the area when a nuclear bomb explodes, new research suggests rather than 'sheltering in place' as many emergency programs insist, your best bet for survival might be to run away from the blast.
Sheltering in place is not always the best survival strategy after a nuclear detonation. If you can reach higher quality shelter in less than 30 minutes, you should go for it.
If out in the open, you need to find any shelter at all as quickly as possible.

“Or better yet, dont live in an area where a nuclear blast is likely.”
During the height of the cold war and “really big ones” like 3-5 megaton single warheads, somehow our military had determined the most likely targets for the Rooskies right down to the intersection (basically, heavy industry). I discovered that where I lived, we were actually in the fireball, so “duck and cover” really didn’t matter too much.
The Day After was terrible.
“Threads”, on the other hand, gave me nightmares.
“Bad knees, Ill take the gamma rays and hope for turning into the Hulk or the Thing.”
Given a choice, I think I’d rather be the Thing. These days, I’m angry all the time anyway.
How to Construct a Living Room Fallout Shelter
We have a small house that doesn't have a basement, only about a 2' crawl space. We also don't have any rooms that don't have windows. The outside walls are relatively thin stucco. (We do have a bazillion books inside our house that we could use for emergency insulation! ;o) We're far enough from our nearest big neighbor, San Francisco, that I think we would only get fallout, not blast. But I'm concerned about that fallout. What do you think of the advice at link about how to construct an above-ground inside-your-house shelter? Thanks!!
The dangers from a nuclear detonation vary greatly depending on your distance from the burst. Those very close
will be incinerated almost instantly. Those more than a half a mile to perhaps three miles away will be subject to
massive atmospheric overpressure and the shock wave. You will only have a few seconds at most from the flash of
light till the shockwave hits. Anyone looking in the general direction of the detonation has a good chance of losing some or all vision....depends on the distance and other variables. The gamma radiation from the initial blast is subject to the inverse square law.....more than a few miles away and it’s not a significant health risk. The REAL radiation risk is the fallout that will start raining down within ten minutes or so and increase rapidly. If you are more than about three miles from the blast getting away is a good idea....if you can stay out of the downwind direction. Trick will be moving....most cars will be toast, the roads will be clogged and chaos will be everywhere. Only populated areas will be targeted for
nuclear devices so the crowd factors will be high. The best defense as has been pointed out is to be elsewhere when the canned sunshine arrives. There are things you can do to improve your odds if you are close but random operating factors will take precedence over any plans you make or actions you attempt.
Makes sense to me. Might save lives. Could probably be constructed in half an hour.
The nukes misplaced out of some base in Texas.

Given the current occupant of the White House and his weak-ass foreign policy which coddles muslim terrorists and terrorist sponsoring nations, I wouldn't be surprised if we're hit before Obama leaves office.
That'd be just the cover he needs to declare marshal law and remain in office now wouldn't it?
Trust you have them stored safely, preferably in a faraday cage for good measure?
Hussein is just a front man for the shadowy cabal of leftists who snuck him into office.
They can and will release him to a profitable and famous retirement in 2016.
They will also make sure that his replacement is also on their team.
thank you
this is good information
I am also thinking of when people tried to run away from an approaching hurricane. That worked out well!!!!!
But the Hulk could plead temporary insanity.

I have heard it suggested that the Navy Ship Yard shooting was an attempt to stop the “rogue patriotic” admirals. Nothing to prove this point. But is coinky dink that the ship yard shooting happened a few weeks after the nukes were misplaced. Plus we never heard who the victims or targets were in the Navy Ship Yard.
I know nothing.
