It's an old question, and to some a first-date necessity: Are you a dog person or a cat person? In their respective roles as both work animals and pets (and sometimes even gods), dogs and cats have lived alongside humans for thousands of years. Meanwhile, the persistent dogs versus cats comparison has been running a parallel course.

I have had both several times over but my preference is definitely dogs.
Dogs can also be personal body guards and home security systems too. Try that with a cat... ( unless you have a cougar for a pet ).
Dogs can travel with you in a vehicle, in most cases, easier than a cat.
Dogs can be trained to do incredibly more tasks than cats ( in fact, I never had a cat that could do much of anything useful other than be a cat). Try training your cat to run out and grab the newspaper from the yard when it’s freezing cold out ! LOL. !! Or just get the paper at all !! You gotta love dogs.
I like dogs and cats that think they are dogs.
wow. It is so nice that animals are so considerate of other animals. I am sure God is lucky to have beautiful dog now.
My brothers dog hid under the bed when a guy crashed through the back door and she stayed there for so long they were afraid she had gotten out and run away.
My next door neighbors have 2 English Mastiffs and the burglars came in anyway and robbed the master bed room after shutting the hall door.
I am still counting on my 4 dogs and my BEWARE OF DOG signs to make the burglars go somewhere else.
I am a cat person. I just saw this earlier:
Science proves it: Cats are stupid jerks

My cat, Mr. Crackerjacks, loves to go on car rides. I’ll say “byes-byes” and he’ll jump up on my shoulder. I walk out to the car, open the door, and he jumps right in. He’ll then look out the passenger side window, like a dog. When we get home, I get out and he’ll jump right back on my shoulder for the ride back inside the house. We’re inseparable, and it’s like having a dog AND a cat!
This is going to be an interesting thread, LOL.
I adore dogs, but I will always be a cat person at heart.
We're out here. Can't stand dogs.
I miss him.

Cats: hair all over the place and they go wherever they want - like the kitchen counters which drives me nuts.
My dog: poodle doesn’t shed but I have to walk her - which actually is good for me despite the weather.
Guess, despite growing up with cats, I’m a dog person.
Huh? You do, all the time. My husband, a Southern boy through and through, loves dogs and cats. My dad was raised on a farm, and he was a dyed-in-the-wool cat person.
Don't know why people think cats are some frou-frou sissy kind of pet. They're little tigers with brave hearts, and quite often they end up getting the top hand in their relationships with dogs.
If you are a giver, you prefer cats. If you are a taker, you prefer dogs. Dogs give affection, cats take it.
I tend to lose my appetite when our friend's cat scuffs around in its poop box and than hops up on the kitchen counter to see what's cooking.
No worse than a dog licking your face right after he was licking his...well, you know.
Like butterflies cats need no excuse for being.

That isn’t saying a cat CAN’T do it.
Shows they are smart enough not to.
Only proof you need that cats are smarter:
“Try training 6 or eight cats to pull your butt through 30 miles or so of snow”
The picture comes to mind of all 8 cats pulling in a different direction.
Hence the statement: “Harder than trying to herd cats”.
And the answer to the other question is: Ginger.
“Like butterflies cats need no excuse for being.”
Kind of like welfare recipients?
