Word For The Day, Monday, 1/13/14
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
diminution; noun
1. the act, fact, or process of diminishing; lessening; reduction. 2. Music. the repetition or imitation of a subject or theme in notes of shorter duration than those first used.
Etymology: 12751325; Middle English diminucion < Anglo-French diminuciun < Latin dīminūtiōn- (stem of dīminūtiō ), for dēminūtiōn- (stem of dēminūtiō ) (by influence of dīmunuere; see diminish), equivalent to dēminūt ( us ) (past participle of dēminuere, equivalent to dē- de- + minuere to lessen) + -iōn- -ion
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
I can appreciate your dilemma, but I can’t say that I’ve ever experienced anything like it. I come from an ethnic group that does things differently-especially rural people like my folks-someone would be disowned/shunned by the family for what is commonly done in some modern cultures-especially the lying-and another relative would move mom in with them and protect her and her stuff, further disgracing the other relative-like the aunt I mentioned awhile back who has all the Chinese stuff-everyone finds it gaudy, but when she is gone, someone will treasure it all the same out of love and remembrance. Seems harsh and even primitive, I know but I was raised in that culture, where reverence for the wishes of, and responsibility for elders has been part of it for hundreds of years.
The circus of the stolen goods sounds dangerous and insane-did this happen in a “city” of in a ‘burb?
A city so overwhelmed by crime that the female perp of our burglary got time served and 3 years probation. She was on thestreet 2 weeks after her trial. The male perp got NOTHING — wasn’t even charged, even though he is the one who broke into the house. He had not stolen goods on him, even though he rofited from the theft.
The police are really nice, but overwhelmed with work. It is hard to get them to return a phone call. The streets are filled with people pushing cars and picking up stuff out of garbage cans. They have a centralized place where they sell it for pocket money.
When we were cleaning our Mom’s house, we hired a dumpster. We had to rout people out of it every morning. Made the mistake of putting an old couch in it first thing, and people started sleeping in there.
Mom is fiercly independent; and we tried to get her to move to WI with us, but she flatly refused. It was only because she broke her leg in the middle of the night and went to rehab that we got her to move to assisted living. She would rather be suffering on her own, I think. They treat her like a queen, but she really hates having to ask for things.
Medically she can no longer live on her own.
No offense taken-if I were heavier, my work would suffer-one of the advantages I have over the guys on crews is being agile and light enough to work in places where someone heavier and larger could not maneuver, or would go crashing through-part of my job is also preventing work-related injuries...
By the way-my former neighbor and her girlfriend, blondie the dyke, were both nicely proportioned when blondie moved in, but within 6-8 months, they both were what my first husband called wide-screen mamas...
Granted-the only hard living I’ve ever done has not been in a city-but that sounds like an awful place to me just the same. I’d probably have tied up and gagged my relative, taken them home, treated them like royalty till they were seduced into getting rid of the crime trap. My mom was a loner, but she would have come to bro or me if the need had arisen, because it is the way things are done among us and we would share the cost of homecare from a person chosen by us-I don’t consider most “agencies” very trustworthy from what I’ve seen. Better an older person-maybe a very distant relative-who is strong and caring, but who may have lost work, and wants room and board-that is very common where I’m from...
You reinforce my aversion and dislike of cities, for better of worse...
"Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women."
The complaint Media participates in the diminution of critical thinking among the American public by dimming them with minutiae & “facts” which draw attention away from the actual news...
Ay, papi-lo que quierio-my compadre just told me he heard the Spanish language Obamascare website is a mess of improper translations, in addition to the same problems the English one has-like “premium” being translated to “prima”-female cousin-and that people are unimpressed/not signing up. It reminds me of that badly translated video game being quoted here years ago-somebody set up us the bomb, all of your base belong to us, etc-what a joke that it is FUBAR...
Yes, the bilingual (I suppose) navigators are having to translate the “Spanish” website into Spanish for the people they are trying to help. Probably fed the entire thing into a computer translator.
And on top of that, some of the links go to English pages.
Yes, but you have to click “2”
Good one! A++++ your guys beat the caps yesterday!
Even the title page has a nonsensical translation-we already know the “navigators” can’t even navigate in proper English or do basic math, so of course they just went to a computer translation site-they can’t be expected to spend OUR money for a quality translation, after all...
Sounds good to me too! A+++
Post-game, he was very appreciative for all the "U-S-A!" chants in the arena.
