Okay, I need some expertise here My sound driver keeps cutting out, videos wont play, sound wont work once it starts
videos play 2 or 3 seconds and stop, if I click on the position icon on the progress bar, they begin again but stop, no sound
Also, my picture preview in Windows Explorer has stopped working
rebooting doesn't change the picture preview, but the sound driver seems to come back on sometimes
When I shut down, my windows exit sound usually comes back on, too
download CCLeaner and MalwareBytes and Avast.com antivirus and let them all scan and clean your system
Its probably all spooged up and just needs a good cleaning
also, check your MEMORY 9when you boot and undet control panel) to make sure it is seeing all of it.
If you dont have a MINIMUM of 4 Gig then get some more memory (8 is best)
Get a thumdrive and use “Speed Up Yor System” (readyboost cache) with it
Unfragement your disk drive.
if that does not do it, then you have a harware problem.
Periodically, when things seem to be working on my Win 7 laptop and desktop, I do a system image backup, if I have installed updates, upgrades, new versions, new programs.
System image backups are great. If one runs into a problem, they can restore to that earlier time. By doing an image restore, one does not lose their preference settings or installed programs. A system image restore takes about 45 minutes, compared to 2+ days to reinstall Windows and programs from scratch.
I quit upgrading most Win7 related several months ago. Java created conflicts. Windows updates created conflicts. Firefox created conflicts. Adobe Flash created conflicts. It got to the point it was safer to leave everything alone, once I got it all working together.
First, you should always provide system specs when seeking help.
Hold down the Windows key (left, with the flag on it) and the R key (for the Run command) and let go. Type dxdiag and hit OK. Choose to Save all information to your Desktop, then open it and copy and paste here the first section. Then copy the first few lines under Sound Devices, down to Driver Provider. No personal info will be sent.
Then tell us what your cpu cycles are from the Task Manager (hold down ctrl, alt, delete and let go).
Then tell us if you see any conflicts in Device manager (paste devmgmt.msc in the Run command and hit OK)
You can also look in Event Viewer for error reports (eventvwr.msc in Run command)
For videos doing stop and go, go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and tell us the result.
That will help diagnosis things.

Have you updated your video card driver lately?
Download CCleaner, and run cleaner, and the registry cleaner. See if it helps.

In task manager, I saw this recently, too, it says I am running 5 or 6 copies of CHROME, I only have 2 windows open, so, I was wonderng what in the world would cause that
my cycles are all 00, 01 and 02’s
my performance is using half my RAM, and 10-45% of my CPU, depending on whether I am typing or whatever it seems, but 1-2% when just looking at it
deleted one of the Chrome’s, okay, but the next one killed this window, it did restore when I started chrome again :)
I use PC TOOLS registry cleaner, for this desktop, it doesn’t show a lot of action, but for the laptop I use it on, that shows a ton of action in the registry, not sure why!
You can see multiple instances of a browser in Task Manager, even if you don’t have that many windows open. It may open a separate process for each tab, and sometimes, when you close the tabs, it doesn’t end the process and free up that memory until you close the entire browser.
Now, as for the sound driver issue, is the sound only cutting out on videos? Or is it every sound on the computer? A good way to test is just to change the volume using the volume slider near the clock, and see if it makes a “ping” after you change it. If you can hear that, the sound driver is fine. Then it’s probably another problem, like you need to update Flash, or whatever add-on or codec is needed to watch the video.
If you don’t hear a ping, then look at the sound drivers. Go to the Start menu, right-click Computer, select Properties, and then select Device Manager from the left-hand side menu. Expand the section Sound, Video & Game Controllers, and look for anything with a red X or yellow exclamation point next to it. If you see one, right-click that, and select Update Driver Software, tell it to search automatically, and cross your fingers.
If it can’t find the drivers, or tells you they are already up to date, or if updating just doesn’t resolve the issue, try to manually install the drivers. Go to your soundcard manufacturer (or HP’s) website and search for the right drivers for your card and OS, and download them and run the installer.
so when trying to diagnose all real odd computer behavior
1)clean out the gunk. delete */temp/*.* and *.tmp
2)delete recycled files ie anything in the trash bin.
3)defrag the hard drive, part of defrag is first running chkdsk with auto repair and bad sector recover. this is the most important step. often odd performance issues are early warnings of drive failure.
So everything is checking out, well maybe. the drive needs to be checked by the MFG’s own diag offline program just to be sure.
assuming all is good now we’re in registry issues so get a good cleaner.

Other issues that can be a problem are dirt(clean fans remove dust dirt etc. (heat can cause issues) power supplies becoming wonky can as well. Memory going bad or corrosion on the contacts. so memtest and removing the mem modules. cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser then reseat retest
So now my rant
had a bad (can you say god decided I needed to be challenged even though he/she knows I’m agnostic) few days. pips froze then gushed phone lines crapped out.
So the pipe issue was a bad solder joint incased in a triple floor joist. horz to 45 to 45 imbedded in the middle of a triple floor joist with the cold water pipe soldered inside the the mid joist inside the wood.
How do you solder inside wood and not leave burn marks
then my phone decides to crash line 1 good 2 off line.
rerun wire /redo connectors, in the end the dam phone had to be rebooted, really corded phones crash
It was not for showing errors but to provide specs for us to help you. You can also hold down windows key + Pause/Break key(and let go) to get basic info.

That is normal, and Chrome uses one process for each tab, plugin and extension. If Firefox did that (it apparently does for adobe flash plugin) i would have about 100.

Click on "CPU" on the top of cpu column twice to toggle it so the highest is at the top. Also go to View>Update speed and put Low.

Ram should be OK for what you are now running, and cpu ok at long as it does stay sustained above around 20%. But find out what progs are using the most.
Also, make sure the problem is not with audio plugs being loose or a break in the wires, and that the sound is not being muted. On W/8 my sound usually is muted after coming out of Sleep.
Try a set of headphones. And as said, look for the latest drivers.

Been there, done that. I’d try re-installing existing drivers one at a time when you find problems. It’s not too hard if you can find the proper instructions.
Could be a codec. You can try to install a codec pack, but often they are pain to find the bad codec.
