Word For The Day, Wednesday, January 8, 2014-- demimonde
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
demimonde [dem-ee-mond, French: duh-mee-mawnd]
noun
1. (esp in the 19th century) those women considered to be outside respectable society, esp on account of sexual promiscuity
2. any social group considered to be not wholly respectable.
3. prostitutes or courtesans in general.
4. a group whose activities are ethically or legally questionable: a demimonde of investigative journalists writing for the sensationalist tabloids.
5. a group characterized by lack of success or status: the literary demimonde.
Origin:
[C19: from French, literally: half-world]
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
She has always had kind of a Connecticut thing with being barely able to open her mouth.
Totes agree with both Oreilly and David Brooks on pot legalization. Society will decline even further with more and more legalization. There is nothing good that comes from legalized dope, and plenty of bad.
this was a good bit more than that though. she most def had it done.
There is nothing good that comes from prohibited dope, and plenty of bad.
We waste way too much money (that we don’t have) on this futile prohibition.
yeah i know you are a pro-dope, doper.
but repubs hate the POO-ER.
It’s pragmatic at this point. Even if I never smoke it again, it makes more sense to tax and regulate it versus what we are doing now.
I would rather the money go to the treasury legitimately rather than go to cartels, organized crime and crooked cops and politicians.
yet many of us appreciate a great POOP-PER
HD, you are the only person above age 2 who uses that term for it! LOL!!
Do you know anything about NJ inheritance taxes? I think they are unconscionable, to tax the dead who were already taxed on all of their money but I got a letter about my dad’s estate which was solely a very small life insurance policy. Can you tax someone’s life insurance policy? I wanted to use it to pay for his burial expenses.
Did you see the NR story about Appalachia last month? Very sad. And the fact that food stamps/benefits buy soda and cases of soda are traded around as a currency for drugs and other illicit things is really stunning.
Well if I tell someone, usually a chick, that they have a “Great dupa” it sounds self-serving.
i am bothered more by the societal impact of even more people doping up, like we need more mind altering substances to screw up an already screwed up populace. and there will be people who are law abiding who will do it if it’s legal who weren’t before, so it can’t help but cause a greater proliferation. For Gods sake, people just need to grow up, man up, buckle down and fly right, instead of looking for ways to tune out and abdicate responsibility.
no, i didn’t, but it is depressed and depressing places like that [and Rome, NY which is supposedly a meth capital] that drugs and escapism flourish. do not know what the answer is, so much of life is depressing. i guess maybe just selling your stuff and walking across the country and praying is the best option! for now, i play the rosary app on my smartphone on the way home from work in the car. not quite the same but it’s something!
so one of your pickup lines is to tell someone they have a super poop-er? : ) how’s that working out for ya? LOL
Wait no; upon further review, they do work equally as well...but I get hit less with the new line.
It’s frightening for the family. I retweeted it.
I would argue that in several ways:
1. Any impact would be marginal and still superior to the status quo
2. A vast majority will simply be those who already smoke pot doing so legally now.
3. Another number of new users (previously afraid of legalities) would likely be expressing a “drug of choice” preference over alcohol. And alcohol is more damaging.
