Six months after Matthew's death, Mary is mired in grief, and the family and servants try to help her face a future without Matthew. Meanwhile, both Tom Branson and Carson face figures from their pasts, and Edith experiments with modernism.

The much-loved cast of Downton Abbey Season 4 includes Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Joanne Froggatt, Penelope Wilton, and a host of others, with guest stars Shirley MacLaine and Paul Giamatti. Written and created by Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey, Season 4 marks the return of one of television's most beloved and anticipated drama series to MASTERPIECE on PBS.

I would say the house, the grounds and the rooms are about the size I expected them to be, although the way the exterior is shot on film does make it seem larger than it actually is.

I watched them over the summer, and it was fun until Mathew died. So ticked off about that.

Anna has a main role in this series - which is good, but kind of has an abrupt ending. I believe it was planned to continue, but for some reason, didn’t.

Both Matthew and Sybil wanted out of the series to pursue other things, so they decided to kill them off rather than have replacements.

It's the most absurd, trite melodrama I've seen.

The women I know seem to like it.

First season wasn't bad. Then they decided to start killing off the characters.

In British terms it's a conservative series. The creator, Julian Fellowes, is a Tory peer and the son-in-law of an Earl.

Decades ago, there was the same enthusiasm about Upstairs, Downstairs. Shows like this tap into something about human nature that isn't going to go way. But the production quality is much higher than those old series shot in studios on videotape.

The show reminds me of East Enders, but done in an upper class setting. I also hate how Bates and his wife always get beat down with the story lines.

Oh, no doubt it's very well done, and like someone else said, light years better as entertainment than 99% of the dreck on TV.

My wife likes it, and I enjoy "watching" it with her.

I've been too busy taking down tree, decorations, etc. this week to do any commenting on the first episode of this season. Still slaving away today.

However, I can encapsulate Sunday night's episode in one word, "DELICIOUS"! The fast-moving vignettes certainly whetted my appetite for MORE, MORE, MORE!

BTW, does anyone know if O'Brien's mysterious disappearance is due to a plot line....or, perhaps, is she the "unknown other" cast member who quit the show and was written out of the series?

Leni

I’ve been meaning to pop in for a chat about it as well, but got distracted with other things.

This will explain the departure of O’Brien - she wanted to move on.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2289942/Downton-Abbeys-mean-maid-OBrien-Siobhan-Finneran-reveals-shes-quit—gone-blonde.html

The two hours flew by, that’s for sure. I had forgotten the story line about Carson and his estranged friend. We learned what that was all about and it was resolved.

Mary came back to life and will learn to assert herself in the family business dealings. She and her father are sure to come to blows over future decisions.

I wonder if there’s something sinister involved with Edith and the publisher. My prediction is that he’s going to dump her and move on to greener pastures and her heart will be again broken.

Can’t figure out what’s going on with Barrow and Cora’s new lady’s maid, but there’s something afoot. Even without O’Brien, Barrow is determined to undermine the Bates family and uses others as pawns in his schemes.

Rose’s naïveté is going to get her in trouble in one way or another. Clear as day.

Too bad for Moseley - hope he lands on his feet.

Violet is the same as ever. It seemed out of character for Isobel to be so paralyzed for so long. She seemed almost as frozen as Mary, but will hopefully regain her spunk soon.

The Daisy/Ivy soap opera is intriguing. Ivy’s too trusting and gullible. She’s likable, so I hope she stays and becomes more assertive toward that obnoxious young guy who’s leading her on - forget his name.

That’s about all the observations I have for now.

Tata...

I’m wondering if Mrs. O’Brien’s disappearance is just that she took off for no good reason, or if she’s actually dead. Did Barrow have something to do with getting her bumped off, or causing her to leave? Does this tie in with the woman who has now taken her place. Does she have a part too in O’Brien’s disappearance? Maybe in cahoots with Thomas, and that’s why Thomas has a hold over her? Something no good is going on with O’Brien’s disappearance. And what about the telegram O’Brien allegedly got the day before she got up and left. Was that part of a plot to get her to leave suddenly? Remember, Thomas and O’Brien had a falling out and didn’t like each other anymore. There is more here than meets the eye.

Good call - I didn’t think of Thomas being involved in O’Brien’s disappearance, but makes sense.

I don’t recall that new maid appearing in previous seasons. The story behind her is that she worked there for a short time before moving on to get more training in hair prep, etc. Was she in previous episodes?

I only recall two maids being there and moving on - Gwen who became a secretary and the one who was sacked and had the little boy that she gave up to his father’s parents (Ethel?). I liked the latter one and have wished that she would came back into the story somehow.
