I don't like to let the green shoots get longer than about 2.5 inches. If I do, they are too easy to rub off accidentally. I want them planted before they reach that stage.
Push comes to shove, I'll plant them in the big garden and cover them over with leaf mulch until the chance of freezing has passed.
