Thanks for the picture of The Bean. DD and I just took the South Shore into town and went to the Art Institute. We had a great time.

Are you speaking from experience???

Nice try. No, like Chicago I only see such things from a safe distance or pictures in the news.

Heavily policed and even more heavily populated.

Chicago became an uninteresting city when Daley bulldozed Meigs.

Calling local government debt “staggering,” Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas announced Tuesday that the $108 billion debt tab across various governing bodies in the county translates to $63,525 per Chicago household and nearly $33,000 per suburban household.

The data, collected thanks to a beefed up county ordinance on debt disclosure, includes a first-time detailed look at pension liabilities for Cook County municipalities and taxing districts reported, which total more than $50 billion. The unfunded pension liabilities add up to $25 billion — nearly a quarter of the overall debt countywide.

(2011 story)Every Chicago household’s share of local govt. debt: $63,525

My mother’s side of the family are all from Springfield and Lincoln Illinois area. My Mom’s cousin went to Chicago and was murdered shortly after he got there. It was long ago, but Mom’s family moved over here to Indy after that.

Not anywhere near the size of Chicago, but I still would rather not live in a big city. I love people but I don’t like being crammed in with people all around me. My dream is to get out of here and move to a rural area. We are here because my husband’s job is here. That is it.

I like a more remote lifestyle. If I want a dose of big city, I will go in and then get out. LOL

Last time I was in Chicago, we went to my son’s graduation at the naval station in north Chicago. We got stuck in a humongous snowstorm while there and it took 12 hours to get back into Northern Indiana. I thought I was going to lose it! Stuck in traffic, poor visibility. I needed a few extra blood pressure pills. I can’t stand being trapped.

My husband swore that he would never go there again. And we haven’t!

I grew up in and around a very small town (Hanover MI) of about 350 people then. Now I live in a town less than a 3rd as big. I also like people but don't want to live with them jammed in all around me.

I go to Detroit to pimp conservatism to the folks. Being urban they'll always require more services but I point to the fact that I have free market choices of the services I need like garbage pick up. I also go as a means of providing them with an opportunity to see a real live tea partier.

The metropolis I call home now. My closest neighbor is about 25 yards away.

For the New Year and the Obama agenda, they have had Ashley Banfield on CNN doing stories about how the crime rate in Chicago is “down” with some clips of Rahm Emanuel in the segment. Trying to gloss over all the murders basically, with their propaganda.

Indianapolis is much nicer than Chicago. I live 20 miles north of downtown, about 2 miles from where that mother and daughter were killed in the home invasion in Westfield.

I have my 45 rule. I don’t go into Indianapolis without a .45. I can’t do this in Chicago so I will not go there.

I noticed they included justifiable homicides in those figures, when in the figures I looked at it was murder or non-accidental manslaughter only.

Perhaps that might play into the discrepancy, people love to play games with numbers like these.

You are showing pictures of buildings and roads from several thousand feet which obscures what makes Chicago a fugly place. Get down to street level with that camera and take pictures from a couple of thousand feet to the south of those skyscrapers. Before you do, let us know where to send the condolence cards.

I was born in Albion as well. Doctor Keefer delivered me.

cascarelli’s in Albion is where I learned that olive oil really is a condiment.

I live in Martintucky now, moved here from the Detroit area years ago and never looked back.

It gets a bad rap, but in all honesty its nothing like people make it out to be. We can go north or south for the big city stuff and live the small town life otherwise.

Actually the murder rate is down. It’s all over the local media.
