Perhaps unsurprisingly given Google’s now somewhat defunct plans for GoogleTV, YouTube has been one of the glaring omissions from the Roku platform. But not any longer. Roku has announced that a YouTube channel is now available on the Roku 3 in USA, Canada, UK and the Republic of Ireland. Older Rokus will be getting the channel next year, though the exact timing is unclear. For non-Roku owners, a channel is roughly equivalent to an app on other platforms. The YouTube channel supports full 1080p HD and the press release suggests that subscriptions will carry over from other platforms so that your favourites can easily be seen on the Roku. The new channel also features “Send to TV”, which after pairing, lets you send a YouTube video from your smartphone or tablet for viewing on the Roku. As a Roku 2 XS owner, I’m delighted but will have to wait a bit longer until I get the YouTube channel on my device (unless Santa has a surprise for me). Sadly, it will be one less reason to turn on my Nintendo Wii, especially with the HD support on the Roku.
YouTube is already available on computers, tablets and smart phones, plus gaming consoles.

WE can watch Youtube through our DVD player, somehow. That’s how we saw the “Smarter Every Day” science series.
How did you reach this conclusion? I used scanURL.net and the site came up clean.
A lot of the newer Blue-ray and smart TV's have Wi-fi capability built right in, which enable users to stream Youtube, Amazon Instant video, Netflix and the like easily.
When I clicked on the link Kaspersky blocked it and cited it as a virus. Sorry. Perhaps my AV software is more sensitive than yours. :)

I went to Best Buy recently with the intent to buy a Roku. While there I noticed a Blu-Ray with streaming capability and it was much cheaper than the Roku 3. When I asked the clerk if the streaming on the Blu-Ray was somehow inferior to the Roku he looked at me like I was crazy. He couldn’t explain anything. I left without buying anything and I still haven’t.
I am sure there are Best Buy clerks who know their products, just like there are a handful of Lowes employees who actually know hardware, but most at both places are worthless.
I have the original ROKU and have a ‘private’ YouTube channel app. I don’t watch YouTube much on the big screen, so I don’t use the app very often.
The WDTV Live box already has a YouTube app built in.
Most of the YouTube I watch is short videos on the laptop or desktop computer. YouTube’s menuing does not make it easy to find things.

Blue ray video is 1080p. The advantage of the roku over my smart tv and streaming blue ray is it’s speed and content. There are probably close to 800channels. The Blaze Tv is excellent.

I currently use "twonky" to pair my smartphone with my Roku for streaming YouTube to the TV. It works, but it's clunky. I'd prefer to just have a YouTube channel available.

Kaspersky is a respected vendor so your concern is completely reasonable. I think Kaspersky is wrong in this case, but I don’t know of a definitive method of determining whether or not a site harbors malware so prudence is a good policy.
I’m not familiar with WDTV. I’ll have to check out out.
My wife is the TV watcher in our house and Twonky looked a bit too geeky for her so I didn’t pursue it. I’m hoping the Roku implementation will be straightforward.
Just as a point of interest, last weekend I pulled up the Alistair Sims version of A Christmas Story on Youtube on my iPhone, connected to my teevee via a $100 Apple TV box and AirPlay, hit play, and it, well, just worked.
I can also do the same thing by playing Amazon Prime on my iPhone, as Amazon’s Instant Video app now supports AirPlay.
I was amazed how easy it was.
I’m not exactly an Apple fanboy but it is nice when things work. I have now cut the cord, and if it isnt on Netflix, YouTube, or Amazon Instant Video, oh well.
Amazon Prime - $79 per year ($6.50 a month)
Netflix online - $8 month
Monthlies 14.50 a month (over and above an internet connection)
Works for me.
