Airline sorry for 'H8GAYS' confirmation code
The Telegraph ^ | 12/17/2013 | Oliver Smith

Jeff White discovered the code after checking in for a Delta Air Lines flight from Pensacola, Florida, to Albany, New York, earlier this month, the Washington Post reports.

“At first I didn’t think I read it right,” Mr White, a student at the University of West Florida, told the newspaper. “I was worried that another customer might think I somehow picked that code. If I were a gay male, I might have thought that a Delta worker purposely gave me that code, and that would have made me extremely uncomfortable.”

Delta Air Lines apologised for any “concern or misunderstanding”, but insisted that the confirmation codes “are computer-generated and are completely random”. “We will make every effort to ensure that a similar combination does not occur in the future,” added Russell Cason, a spokesman for the airline.

...and that would have made me extremely uncomfortable...

Well, we can't have THAT now, can we?

Assuming only letters and numbers, a 6-digit code has ~2.2 billion different combinations (also assuming no rules, like has to start with a letter, or any blacklist). Delta has about 5,800 flights per day, each with around 80 passengers. So that’s 170 million codes per year. They’ve probably generated this code (and several others that might hurt your feelings) multiple times previously, only no one’s been too thin-skinned to ever care.

For crying out loud, this is a complete non-story.

What tripe.

America needs to get over this and move forward once again. We have become lost in silly nonsense.

There’s something else going on here

I would look to staff. This smells of the same stench as the lesbian tip scandal, the HS football hate graffiti, and the endless list of phony attacks on special groups. This was someone on staff, with access to the system, who has a rainbow axe to grind.

That’s funny. License plate codes are scrubbed so nobody gets to drive around with an offensive (however defined) plate for 20 years.

Making an airline reservation “no print” list to allay sensitivities seems totally over the PC top, as the codes are seen only by the passenger, and occasionally, the ticket agent.

“I was worried that another customer might think I somehow picked that code"

I can't think of any instance where anyone has ever seen my confirmation codes (other than airline employees if I call in for an upgrade or to check bags). It's not like they tattoo it to your forehead.

So if the codes are randomly generated, that means there’s an equal change for “GAYMRG” or “LVBOYZ” to show up, which I’m sure would be much more palatable to these sorts of people.

Sigh.

Deep down inside, “Colossus” knows homosexuality is a sin. I see the message here.

I'm thinking maybe a disgruntled programmer.

Following the hubbub over this, the computer password has beenn reset to ‘LUVFAG’

Southwest Airlines has first dibs on anything with "LUV".

This story is completely bogus. Anyone who has flown Delta knows that their confirmation code is “H8CUSTOMERS”.

Probably a 1 in a trillion chance of happening again but the dog whistle worked.

I would have taken my flight and never looked back but some people just have to run to the press.
