So, for archival purposes, what should be downloaded and stored for future references, in addition to the player?

That is, plug ins, visualizations, skins, anything else?

I still use Winamp, to edit the information in MP3 files. Now there is one more reason to hate AOL.

Wouldn’t be surprising to see it go open-source.

That would be good. I think a lot of the time that cancelled stuff should be thrown out for free like that

I quit using winamp many years ago when I took a minute to read their privacy policy. They gave themselves the right to call home and track usage. In MY book, that’s a trojan. I don’t like trojan ware no matter how much fun or convenient.

I spent about 10 hours yesterday clearing trojans and malware from a laptop!

Ya, same here... :/ Had just recommended it to someone last weekend,, he downloaded and installed... His response to me was, “WOW, I didn’t know a laptop could sound so good!”

I’m a fan of Jazzanova, Massive Attack, Sky Trees, Chance’s End, and other “acid jazz” or “ambient” artists, and I can thank Shoutcast for introducing them to me. I use Pandora for all my random artist stuff like that, but I will miss Winamp.

To be honest, I’ve been looking for a Winamp replacement for a while. I was reluctant to upgrade due to all of the recent changes AOL was making to the program. There were other better options out there.

VLC is a GREAT app. It plays almost anything you throw at it, audio or video. It’s interface isn’t as intuitive as Winamp though, and they don’t have a library management tool built in.

I’m really looking for a library management option along with an audio player. I have so much music that I want to have something that can recommend other tracks in the library or shuffle based on tastes. I love my Pandora, but sometimes I like to go back to the old tunes I so loved.

It’s amazing how much is available. For that matter, there’s OpenOffice and other freebie office software that began life as open source.
