I read the initial reports yesterday as they came available from Houston tv. This has all come across, at least to me, as alarmist reporting.

Alarmist reporting is standard.

Everytime snow is predicted here the local tv stations go through ritual coverage with reporters standing in front of enormous piles of road salt, reporters standing out in the weather looking for a snow flake, and similar tomfoolery.

There are diseases that would be very unpleasant if they changed slightly or somehow were introduced here, but basic hygiene matters greatly.

I chuckle each winter when the snow begins to fly and freezing rain hits. The reporters act as if each year is the first for this to happen. Each year people are without electricity, and according to the reporters and reporerettes it is TERRIBLE. They all bundle up in pretty snow outfits, stand in the deepest snow they can find along a busy road and tell us how terrible the weather is.
