A North Korean army minister was executed with a mortar round for reportedly drinking and carousing during the official mourning period after Kim Jong-il's death.
On the orders of Kim Jong-un to leave "no trace of him behind, down to his hair," according to South Korean media, Kim Chol was forced to stand on a spot that had been zeroed in for a mortar round and "obliterated."

It was known that it could take several strokes using an axe to "get the job done". The most famous was the execution of Mary Stewart (Queen of Scots). Legend says it took three chops before the lady's head was fully separated from her body. Then she had the post-mortem indignity of her head dropping out of a wig and hitting the floor when they held it up by the hair to show it to the audience.
A really sharp sword handled by someone who knew how to use it was probably the "cleanest" tool till the invention of the guillotine. Still not as quick and certain as being blown into pink mist by a mortar round. But certainly better than how folks convicted of treason not of royal blood were disposed of. The second to last scenes of Braveheart forgot to include the still connected intestines roasting on hot embers and limb removal before decapitation.

Wouldn't a 7.62mm be cheaper? 5.56mm Sure. In the right place.

I will ask a few of my ex-artillery friends.
In writing, of course; they’re mostly deaf.

This is an old story. It happened a week or two after mini-Kim took over.

Cost doesn’t matter - the NORK government will probably bill the family for the round.

How do you get up there to hang it and get out of the way in time? Ladder, platform? How heavy is a 160mm round?

I notice the Telegraph article does not provide a source for stating Jang was taken out by mortar. Two sources did state he was machine gunned to death (see below). There have been much earlier reports of using mortar rounds to obliterate military persons who opposed Jong Un and with almost the same quote as used here in this article, re: "down to his hair". Whichever method, it is safe to say Jang is no more. Hawon Jung @allyjung "Jang was executed by machine gun, says S.#Korea MP, head of intelligence committee. Military says no unusual troops movement in N.Korea yet." Jaehwan Cho 조재환 @hohocho S.#Korea's ruiling party congressman Seo Sang-ki : "We presumed Jang Song Thaek was executed by heavy machine gun"
