My mother grew up in New Rockford.
Back in the 1950’s they would take the car out on the icy roads.
Get up to speed, and throw it into park.
Sit back for the ride.
Sliding for miles.

We live about a hundred miles NNE of Minot near the Peace Gardens.
Today’s low was -26. Our temp in the home was 78. That’s a 104 degree difference between inside and outside temps.
Been thinking about drilling a hole in the lake and do some fishing tomorrow.

A couple of years ago,in January,I spent a night in Val dOr,Quebec...several hundred miles north of Montreal. Went to HS in Val d'Or. Minus 35F & occasionally -40F wasn't all that unusual in January and February. Going for two or three weeks at a time without the temperature exceeding 10F for the high was routine.
Everyone had a block heater in their automobile or truck ... a diesel starting in those temperatures (diesel fuel can gel if not winterized) takes a toll on the battery. You're lucky.

I grew up in Northern Minesota. I walked to school one morning when the radio reported -53 degrees. (It was uphill both ways). In college, I put a gallon jug of chlorene gas on the porch through most of February, to get it to liquify (at -40 degrees). -14 is balmy!
The first time I visited Phoenix in the winter, I didn't believe that people could actually live where it was warm in the winter. Now I do. People are actually complaining here that it might FREEZE tonight!

That’s exactly what it is here in SW Boise right now, too. The sun went down about 30 minutes ago.

We get the moderating effect of the great lakes in Michigan while they're open. Its definitely winter but won't get seriously cold for another month or so.
Lake effect off the lakes today.

If we’re gonna pay for NASA we may as well use it.
Just click on “Visualize” then on “Worldview” and then on the map that comes up.

Kind of a cool site really because you can get the global sat views for every day going back to the day they started.

When we were kids, our dad, who was in the Air Force, used to threaten that we would get stationed in Minot if we didn’t behave. LOL!

It's God's country.
Most of this part of the west was settled by Christian missionaries.
They set up shop where the train stopped.
Someone needs to write a book about the history of these towns.

3 degrees Fahrenheit in balmy Sandpoint, ID. It'll dip below zero soon. Tonight should be the coldest one of this little chillfest. Tomorrow it's supposed to get all the way up to 10.
Come on, global warming!

"We get the moderating effect of the great lakes in Michigan while they're open."I spent a number of years dealing with weather near Sault Ste. Marie Michigan (Kinross AFB). There were two winter seasons there. The first was when Whitefish Bay was not frozen. We got continuous lake effect snow, with large snow fall problems. Once the bay froze, there was nore more snow, to any extent, and we simply got cold weather.
