I just moved to Oklahoma City from Houston. It's 5 degrees outside. I lived in Houston for more than a decade. The coldest it got where I lived was about 20. Maybe. For a couple of hours. FIVE. DEGREES.
I didn't turn my pipes on to drip and am now trying to get some water out before it develops into a major disaster. Yeah, I've lived in a warm climate so long that I kind of forgot about winterization. The heater in my car, for instance, quit working. I needed antifreeze. I just changed the oil in my car to something lighter than I had in Houston.
My wife grew up in Montana. She told me I was a wimp. Last night she rolled over and said something about the water bill with all the dripping. I said, "What dripping?" She proceeded to cuss me out and call me all kinds of fool. Hey, I've been living on the Gulf Coast for a while, so lay off.
I'm going to sue the SOBs at the UN and Al Freaking Gore for their failure to deliver on global warming. I would accurately express the fury I feel about this ridiculous temperature, but the thread would get pulled for language.
I point out that I grew up in Northeast Oklahoma (Green Country). I NEVER remember it EVER getting down to 5. FIVE.
WHAT DO WE WANT!
GLOBAL WARMING!
WHEN DO WE WANT IT!
YESTERDAY!
Global warming. What a joke.
Global warming is a bunch of hot air!!
Pipes can often freeze but not burst. I just got back inside from propane-torching one of my outside faucets that was froze. I had it set to drip, but guess not enough.
Generally, it takes a hard freeze to burst pipes. We’re talking low teens or single digits.
If you go sub-zero, and your pipes are not protected, kiss them goodbye!!
I had to fire up the 3rd dearborn heater yesterday. (I am only running 2 at the moment).
If it gets any colder I will have to light off the fireplace.
I have not run these heaters in years.
It’s kinda cozy.
I’ve got a couple good pair of wool socks.
They are worth their weight in gold when it comes to saving money on heating bills!
17 degrees outside here, about 66 inside. I could crank my pellet stove up another notch, but I’m good for now.
I’m pretty sure they don’t put water pipes up in the attic like they do here in Houston. You might want to check where the water piping comes into the house to make sure it’s buried well or insulated so that it doesn’t freeze up though. How long is the below freezing weather supposed to last?
Depends on a lot of things. Like I said, 45 years in a cold climate yielded zero frozen pipes. For this guys case, 5deg. is unusual and will be short. The average low in Oklahoma city is 29F. Hardly a realistic danger.
Put a couple of 100 watt bulbs in the crawl space and it will warm up the pipes.
Wait...what..? Really!?
Asshats!
Look on the bright side. At 5F, as you drink beer from a bottle outside, the beer freezes on the inside of the glass. Pure Heaven.
A Dearborn heater? Those things will kill you. I hope you have a working carbon monoxide detector in the house. They do help add some humidity to the house when it’s cold and really dry outside though.
Enjoy it, it is 7 degrees in SE Wisconsin
Don’t know. The outside pipes are frozen. I opened up the valves all the way and nada.
Day before yesterday I cooked up some suet for the birds, they’re out there going crazy for it now.
Some of the sparrows are fighting each other for a perch spot over our patio door. I reckon that means I’ll be hosing down in a few days.
It’s all good. :)
Enjoy Minnesota. -21. Oh my Lord.
Cabin fever is getting the best of me; I think my best bet is to fashion some blades on my boots and go skating.
Thanks a lot, Obama!
When I lived in Houston, those were interesting number. I’d think, “Gosh that sounds cold.” Now it’s more like whiskey tango foxtrot.
I'm assuming you don't have a local chapter of PETA.
I ran the hairdryer for 20 mikes. No go. The wall where the pipe runs is warm, though. Not sure where it’s frozen. My 9-year-old just got one pipe running.
I swear I got married and had kids so I could look inept.
