The story mentions the Chicago pile. In a year they went from a nuclear reaction that produced half a watt to a 4 megawatt reactor.

Technological leaps happen.

Counterpoint: In 1969, the largest commercial aircraft ever built was flown for the first time.

45 years later, the Boeing 747 is still being built.
