Wouldn’t they be “platypi”?

Depends on whether you went to a Jesuit high school and 4 years of Latin.

My trouble is, I can't remember if that would be first or fourth declension...
and then there's the other complication... is the name from a Greek root? I remember even less of Greek.

I don't know about platypus, but the genus name is Greek ( Ornithorhynchus, i.e. "Bird Snout".
