ANTES FORT -- A few miles outside of Jersey Shore, Stan and Rob Shrader are parked next to the Antes Fort firehall in their green pickup, waiting on the game commission. In the bed is a young black bear which Rob shot earlier that morning near the Shrader family camp in Clinton County. For more than 60 years the family has hunted in the mountains around the camp, one generation after the other.
Today the father and son, who come from New Oxford, are the first hunters at the station. They won't be the last.

I say....Take a kid hunting!
Bear meat is good! Made into summer sausage it is great!
Do they hunt bear with dogs in PA????
I’m in Tennessee and have hunted bear for near 40 years with Plott hounds...We also bear hunt in Ontario, Canada...
That looks like a Plott in the picture...The white belly is unusual for a Plott....
never heard of a Plott hound.
do they get the name because when the bear turns to attack they Plottz? I know my Brittany’s in a bear-dog situation would Plotz.
Looks like it could be a Plott hound—but hard to tell for sure.
Does a bear plott in the woods?
bump
May the anti-hunter author find his dog being munched on by Baloo some evening.
Maybe then his bias will change.
Look it up...You got a ‘puter......
Then I’d like to be eating bear sausage while resting my feet on a nice bearskin rug. Using the entire animal seems to be the hunter’s ideal.
sorry if you did not get the humorous anecdote. yes I am aware of Bing, Google, DogPile, etc.
***Do they hunt bear with dogs in PA????***
As Groucho Marx said on YOU BET YOUR LIFE, when told that by a contestant...”It’s best to have your clothes on.”
For me, bear meat is a rarity. I tried an Alaskan recipe and made brats.......very successfully! YUM!
I don’t know PA hunting regs on bear hunting w/ hounds....if it’s important for you to know, you could google for an answer. :)
I’ve totally given up on convincing liberals of ANYthing. ;(
I don’t mind educating the unlearned about the greatest breed of bear dog:

While I generally don’t have anything in common with liberals and can rarely come to an agreement with them on anything, at least our liberal governor bagged a good-sized 6-pointer on opening day of rifle season. Almost (but not quite) makes up for his dumb-ass antic of rescuing his bird feeders in the buff while a black bear chased him back to his house.
I know.
He’ll have to be like the libs in Greenwood Lake NJ who got to watch a bear eat their pets during Corzine’s bear hunt ban.
Might be a Catahoula. More well known in the South, but...
