I grow great tomatoes in about 16” across plastic pots...set in front of the brick on the south side of our house....just have to make a greenhouse around them after planting out to protect from wind/cool weather in May/June... I buy plants, seeding here in W. Oregon is sometimes futile...get really good yield IF they get watered appropriately.

“I grow great tomatoes in about 16” across plastic pots”

That’s exactly what I want for many veggies.

I'm in W. WA State. I plant tomato seeds in Jiffy peat pellets about March 15 and grow them inside for about two months. I grow twice as many seedlings as I truly want. I plant 1/2 them outside about May 15. If they die from cold, I still have the second 1/2 inside; in any case, I plant the second 1/2 outside about June 1 or so. I have had good luck with the early girl variety.
