Winamp Shutting Down On December 20
Slashdot ^ | 11/20/2013

Posted on 11/20/2013 6:00:42 PM PST by markomalley

New submitter Cid Highwind writes "If you want to download the latest version of Winamp, you'd better do it soon. According to a new banner on the download page, AOL will be pulling the plug on the iconic llama-whipping music player in a month. 'Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release. Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years.' Ars Technica ran an article last year detailing how the music player lost its dominance."

The Ars Technica article is pretty interesting...but, can't post Ars Technica to FR.

Download it while you can!

My first audio download on the old IBM Pentium 166hz. Loved the display.

WinAmp is still around? Haven't used it since the early nineties, and it's not listed as far as I can recall on any of the main linux repositories.

Well, I've been meaning to dust off some old computers and have a go at them once again, and I think I have one that still has W95b OSR2 on it so perhaps I will have a look at that now.

Big Media doesn't like gadgets like Winamp. Not enough control for them.

I still use WinAmp all the time too, but at least I’m at v5.6 :).

Running 5.6 right now, with Loop Master and PaceMaker plugins. The BEST way to learn how to play guitar leads of your favorite songs.

Ohhh, it's a 'Doze-ONLY program! With no obvious ports to other OS's, needs a 1.5GHz processsor with 512 MB of system memory and 'Doze XP SP3 or later to run.

However, it IS a free download, so I suppose that's a blessing.

*laugh!* No, unfortunately. W95b OSR2 was the earliest release that at least marginally supported USB (1.1) and it was iffy at best. You actually had to purchase a separate peripheral card, PCI not ISA, and it wasn't until W98 came out that MS began noticing that USB was becoming a standard and began grudging 'support' for it.

I think only under W98SE did it become relatively stable and did not automatically ignore it, but you had to have the specific drivers for each device or it would complain on every boot-up unless you listed it under "unknown devices - disabled" in the Hardware Listing.
