Word For The Day, Thursday, November 14, 2013 – mountebank
dictionaries ad nauseam | 14 November 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

mountebank \ˈmau̇n-ti-ˌbaŋk\ noun
1. a person who sells quack medicines from a platform
2. a boastful unscrupulous pretender : charlatan

Example sentences:
In the more open spaces, jugglers and mountebanks, usually accompanied by performing animals, went through all sorts of gambols and antics.
—Lewis Spence

Swindlers and mountebanks throng hither, adroit thieves creep stealthily about, all Indian customs and fashions are represented, all castes jostle each other.
—Karl Ritter Van Scherzer

Etymology:
Italian montimbanco, from montare to mount + in in, on +banco, banca bench. First Known Use: 1577. Mountebank, pronounced "MOUN-tih-bank," has an interesting origin, in the Italian phrase "monta in banco." It describes a "doctor" who would "mount a bench" in the marketplace. Standing a bit higher than the crowd enabled people to hear his sales pitch and see the potions and powders he claimed were medical cures that never failed — claims as bogus as his credentials. A mountebank is a fast-talking crook pretending to be an expert.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I don’t trust Christie on guns. And his temper tantrum about Sandy spending didn’t help either.

No the MLH is a political term of art, related to Watergate.

The Limited Hangout, is like the Friday news dump.

The MLH, takes it a step further,

That’s my point, Christie needs a guy like Perry.

JFTR, I never trust a Republican that was a former Prosecutor. Unless the Alternative is a Democrat.

Giuliani was a jackbooted little thug. Christie, from my observation, not so much.

I don’t see Christie delving into Gun issues. Especially in a first term.

But he would have to select judges strong on 2nd Amendment.

And selection of judges hasn’t been a strong point of his, from what I have heard.

Well, to be fair, if you wanted it empty, a cannonball would be efficient.

Secondarily, if you wanted a no work way for women to find you more attractive.....

He’s a helpful guy.

Someone mentioned the other day that Obama on Obamacare is basically George Costanza taking us out to see his house in the Hamptons.

That is a very good analogy. And we are all Susan’s parents now, wondering how our country could fall for such a mountebank.

O/T, I found a coop on eBay that I really like, made of cedar. And I had xs look through the covenants of my HOA to see if there are any loopholes.

I thought you had selected a coop already.

And I thought you were already doing this clandestinely.

No, I’m researching before I buy anything. The A frame cedar coop I really liked, because it could be moved and had more square feet, is no longer being made. I don’t know if we could build one from scratch, no pun intended. I’d prefer a kit. I was hoping to find a disaffected urban hipster who was fed up with his Eglu and willing to let it go for a song. We know what breeds we want and when we want to get them.
