Word For The Day, Thursday, November 14, 2013 – mountebank
dictionaries ad nauseam | 14 November 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

mountebank \ˈmau̇n-ti-ˌbaŋk\ noun
1. a person who sells quack medicines from a platform
2. a boastful unscrupulous pretender : charlatan

Example sentences:
In the more open spaces, jugglers and mountebanks, usually accompanied by performing animals, went through all sorts of gambols and antics.
—Lewis Spence

Swindlers and mountebanks throng hither, adroit thieves creep stealthily about, all Indian customs and fashions are represented, all castes jostle each other.
—Karl Ritter Van Scherzer

Etymology:
Italian montimbanco, from montare to mount + in in, on +banco, banca bench. First Known Use: 1577. Mountebank, pronounced "MOUN-tih-bank," has an interesting origin, in the Italian phrase "monta in banco." It describes a "doctor" who would "mount a bench" in the marketplace. Standing a bit higher than the crowd enabled people to hear his sales pitch and see the potions and powders he claimed were medical cures that never failed — claims as bogus as his credentials. A mountebank is a fast-talking crook pretending to be an expert.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I’ve not seen it posted, but Jonah Goldbergs article today is a must read.

It’s on NRO and my twitter feed.

Like Hunter Thompson got reincarnated as a conservative.

Lol, o’d rather be a live idiot. Then again ;-)

But killing off moms is far more macabre.

I think its fair to say, dads get the better end of that schtick :-)

“the dad is made out to be an idiot.”

The only TV dads that still act like one are on the shows on Spanish language stations-and I’m even seeing some wussification there...

Of course. But during the period fairy tales were written, women DID die in childbirth etc those scenarios were not far fetched. The imbecilic husband/father is traced to the women’s movement and political correctness.

Don’t misunderstand me, I agree it is a thing...

I just find it less offensive the the sexualization of little girls characters, and the killing of mothers,

Doofuses as fathers, while retarded, leave real life for kids to observe.

The former, plants imho, worse thoughts in kids minds,

I don’t disagree, I just find the other two far more offensive :-)

So, lets agree that I was wrong, and you were right ;-)

Eff him. McCain seems to be hinting at it as well, lets see how much sense Romney has to stay home, and pet grandchildren.

the winning ticket, Christie/Perry,

Take NJ out of the Dem basket, eliminate fraud in Wisconsin, no Dem can win. Perry, brings those who suspect CC, while eliminating his need to debate, and expose his biggest flaw.

I like Rick Perry on everything except illegal aliens. I’ve never voted for someone who lined up with all of my opinions.
