...Memory/Tradition and Family Recipe.
Wild Turkey (both alcoholic and non :)
My grandma’s stuffing. No one on this planet has made it the right way since she went to her reward in 1993.
Spending my first Thanksgiving with my new Filipina wife.
Her favorite was sweet potato pie.
Thanksgiving 1951, Youngsville, Pennsylvania at my grandfather’s house. I was 5 and all the people I loved were still alive.
What did you call them and were they Olive Green?
Ships did not have or use them(that I know of). Marines in the Field might have them(or an equivalant).
Lefse and rommegrot
Deep fried Turkey injected with butter
Nice story. I was born in Hugo
Dry brining the turkey which we have done for about 20 years now and would not cook it any other way. Roasted garlic mashed potatoes and I must be in charge of the gravy. Hubby always looks forward to the day after - homemade turkey pot pie.
Always crack open a jar of our pickles beets too. Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!
Yes, my family too. But in the end we hug each other and respect each others right to disagree.
Some traditions have come and gone over the years. One tradition has been constant for me for about 40 years; watching the Cowboys game when dinner is over. I used to watch with my dad until he passed on. Now I watch with my sons. And after a few gin & tonics I name entire the roster of their Super Bowl XII team. I think that’s one tradition they are getting tired of.
Mine, too. Cornbread sage dressing, yum. No recipe. Just throw everything in a pan.
Favorite Thanksgiving was when I had to cook the bird in the microwave because we didn't have an oven. Believe it or not, best turkey ever. Crazy.
I remember my grandmother’s corn bread dressing. My family couldn’t figure out why Momo’s dressing was so much better than anyone else’s. Finally Mom asked her for the recipe: 1 pound of bacon, 1 dozen eggs, 1 pound of butter . . . That’s all I can remember, no wonder it was so moist.
Hunting
We have a new family tradition. 3 years ago our eldest married. She and her husband didn’t want the ‘which family do we spend which holiday with’ quandry. So, they rented a big house midway between his folks’ place and ours, gathered both families for the long weekend, which included hikes, games, and a turkey cook-off between my 2 sons.
Since then, two more siblings have married and a new generation has begun. This year we’re looking forward to a larger, extended-extended family get together.
Yep, I can't spend a Thanksgiving without thinking of spending a day in the woods with my dad. We usually went the day after, and the aroma of the simmering (leftover) turkey & andouille gumbo mingles with the fragrance of gun oil in my memory.
My wish is to live someplace where the businesses are all open and everybody is working as is normal on every Thursday other than that one.
My family had a game of wooden skittles. The bloody thing had one piece that was spastic. It’s hysterical, what that thing did. A cousin would try and try and not get it to work right. I fell on the floor laughing.
I also remember half-way making sure an Italian friend stayed. He about froze, but he liked the food.
Thank you.
Welcome home.
