Tserng is now a Rover.com dog-sitter, taking care of four-legged friends in Seattle on a daily basis. It’s quite the change from her last gig, and not exactly where the 36-year-old expected to be after earning her MD from the Medical College of Ohio nearly a decade ago.

... she and her friend are on pace to make $100,000 per year,...

Tserng, who made $40,000 in a training position at her last job as a medical examiner, plans to continue pet sitting for the time being.

Don’t blame her. If you care at all about human beings, its getting harder and harder every year to stay in healthcare.

Actually, I think I read just this morning about a guy who now makes 100k a year cleaning up dog poop, and is having to turn away clients because his schedule is completely full. He’s either an MD or some kind of financial whiz, but was unable to stay employed in his original field. The current job (obviously) requires no training or specialized degree.

Meanwhile, millions in the inner city continue to be congenitally unable to survive on their own.

It’s nice that they created their own jobs. Those are service jobs, and though I don’t knock them I will provide an observation.

Service jobs only provide a living as long as the economy is healthy and thriving. Where I live we have 25% unemployment. There are literally restaurants closing and many stores have gone out of business because people no longer have disposable cash. When there are that many people unemployed the service jobs can no longer expect folks to use their disposable cash to pay them for their services.

We are seeing that here now.

many service jobs go when the economy gets worse.

the more critical, more technical, and more in-demand service jobs remain, however.

ie when times get tough many will walk their own dogs. less likely they will not become home healthcare workers or a utility linesman.

the more you know how to do and fix, the more valuable you are. if you are a good thinker and can take direction, you can learn new stuff and adapt and becomeeven more valuable. to the point many will make sure you’re okay and with them.

Until the last 10 years I would have agreed with you. I also live in a community that has high jobless rates, indeed it has often led the USA in unemployment. When they first announced a Starbucks was going to open , I laughed for 3 days. Who is going to pay $4.50 for a cup of coffee? And at prime times you can't get near a Starbucks( we currently have 5). Most of my doctor friends are actively looking at non-medical opportunities, things that just a few years ago you would have been laughed out of the doctor's lounge at the local hospital for even broaching the subject.
