I may be wrong, but you need a license and tags. The license is your permit to hunt, and the tags represent how many deer you are allowed to take.
You buy the license and that is also a tag.
Your son may have to show that he completed a hunter safety course. I started hunting prior to that requirement and when it came into effect I was grandfathered but I had to show a previous license to confirm I had.
There are many regulations regarding land owners and what they can take. They usually get to take extra but I would have to ask my brother as he owns some land up north.
Your best bet is to go on the DNR web site and poke around the regs they have posted. Right from the horses mouth,so to speak.
You have to have a license to hunt on private land? We hunt on private property every year and never once had a license or tags. We observe the state’s bag limits and regulations, but as I understood it, there’s no regulation with hunting on private property.
On privately owned land, I don’t see any need for a license or tag, unless you’re going to brag up your kills or someone rats you out.

I believe the license comes with one tag. Just go in to Meijers the sporting goods department. They will answer all your questions and fix you up.
Antlerless tags are issued by County now, good for any private land in the county listed on the license.
License and tag are one and the same. There isn’t a ‘back tag’ now.
Most counties in the southern third of the state will have leftover antlerless tags that you can purchase over the counter at any license dealer.
Tags cost $15 each for antlerless or regular gun or bow good only for bucks.
You have to have taken a hunter safety class, or be born before a certain date, to purchase a hunting license. I think you would have to be born before 1960, but don’t quote me on that.
