Cats fight with their hind legs and claws. He'll be fine. Eh, maybe not so much. Depends on what he's fighting. Lack of front claws means he can't hold his opponent as well to get those hind legs around and claw with the rear paws.
My cats over the years have mostly been outdoor/indoor, all of those allowed outside were fully clawed. (The ones missing claws were adoptees or rescues.) And yeah, sometimes a piece of furniture will take a hit from getting clawed. I decided that leaving the cats intact to defend themselves was more important to my peace of mind than having perfect furniture. Your mileage may vary on that sort of decision.
I wouldn't risk my cat's safety and health letting them outdoors if they aren't intact.
Again, your mileage may vary.

I remember all my life my Dad insisting he hated cats, yet when two strays came into their lives, he grew to love them. I think that you, and hubby, will find that the love you receive will more than make up for the pensiveness you feel now. Peanuts will, I'm sure, take ahold of your hearts and be a joy to you. I think you will come to realize that that allowing him to be killed would have been unthinkable. Thank you for caring. I hope Peanuts gives you many years of love and becomes your hubby's best bud!
