As of 2003, consumers have had the right to change providers while keeping their wireless number. Since 2007, consumers have also had the right to "unlock" their wireless device. But the Librarian of Congress recently made a bureaucratic ruling eliminating consumers' right to use their own device after their contract expires.
When the Librarian’s ruling made unlocking illegal, the digital generation responded (both young and old alike) and created a White House petition on this issue. But today, after five bills were introduced, Congress has essentially failed to act.
It’s imperative that Congress act now because: •Every day that Congress fails to act, our service members get sent abroad and have to choose between breaking the law to unlock their phone or not being able to use their device. •Every day that Congress fails to act, millions of Americans commit felonies punishable by 5 years in prison and a $500,000 fines. •Every day that Congress fails to act, international travelers pay higher prices for using their phones abroad. •Every day that Congress fails to act, we continue to inhibit the free market and harm competition which ultimately drives up costs for all consumers.
If you see your Member of Congress, ask them: “Why does Congress delegate these decisions to a quasi-regulatory agent? Isn’t it time to put the Librarian of Congress back to his task of managing the nation’s preeminent library rather than deciding what technologies to ban?”

Nothing makes sense anymore. I don’t get where the gov’t thinks that they have a right to tell us what we can do with a phone that we purchased. We’re talking about the phone, not the service contract.
When will people FINALLY understand that every day, Congress and this President look for new ways to make each one of us criminals and therefore subjects to the Government?
HELLOOOOO!!! WAKE UP!!! This isn't just about PHONES, its about this out of control over-bearing Marxist Government taking away ALL our liberties and making us slaves to the state!!!!
I buy unlocked phones overseas, and put whatever sim card I want in them. I even have a phone that holds two different carriers sim cards,now that is choice! Phones are cheap enough overseas that you do not need to buy a phone on a contract.
I wish those social liberal librarians would leave the GOP once and for all.

That's the name of the game. "The law" has become so pervasive, infathomable and inscrutable that it is impossible for the average citizen to not break the law in some area of life, as said citizen cannot afford the time and cost required to fully know and comply with every facet of the law on the books today.
Under these conditions, it's the decision of the Federal Government whether or not they will prosecute you, not whether you are innocent or guilty.
