LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A judge Thursday denied the City of Irwindale’s request to force a local food company to halt production of a popular chili sauce after citizens complained of strong odors.
The complaint filed against Huy Fong Foods Inc, sought temporary, preliminary and permanent injunctions “enjoining all operations on … the subject property until (Huy) abates the public nuisance herein by preventing and causing the emanation of the strong, offensive chili odor.”
According to the complaint, residents began complaining last month to the city about the chili smell from the 600,000-square-foot facility.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert O’Brien said Thursday morning that the city was “asking for a very radical order on a 24-hours’ notice.”
The city staff met with Huy Fong Foods officials Oct. 1 and company representatives said they would “do everything possible to abate the odors.” But on Oct. 16, the city staff was told by a company official that no odor problem existed, the suit says.
“The odors are so strong and offensive as to have caused residents to move outdoor activities indoors and even to vacate their residences temporarily to seek relief from the odors,” according to the suit.
On Oct. 17, the city sent a notice of violation of the Irwindale Municipal Code to Huy Fong Foods and demanded that a strategy be put in place to correct the problem, according to the complaint.
“To date, the city has received no action plan from (Huy) illustrating the steps it will take to address the problem,” the suit says.
A hearing for a preliminary injunction has been scheduled for Nov. 22.
I hear the real problem is staying hydrated. Local residents are drooling so much, they’re becoming dehydrated.

Is this a case of a once isolated plant now getting complaints from residents of newly built subdivisions?
Or a pig farm .
I love the stuff; it’s here in the Czech Republic, but it’s most typically found in Vietnamese shops. There’s only one grocery store chain I’ve seen carry it, the same and only one that carries refried beans.
Czech really aren’t into spicy foods. :)

Hmmm. A place that makes chili sauce smells like....chili sauce. Who’d a thunk it?
So the city of LA wants to close down a successful business and within 24 hours. Sounds like a shakedown to me. Perhaps the state of Texas would be interested in having this successful business within it’s borders? I don’t think Texans would much mind the smell of chili.

I’ve lived in Harrisonburg, VA one summer and whole town smelled like dog food from the Purina plant.
Downtown Winston-Salem used to smell like a fresh pack of Cigs. before they relocated several miles away.
Smells are part of the cultures of the areas.
Except for the poultry manure dehydrator plant somewhere up in the Shenandoah I stumbled across once. The most vile and nauseous smell and the only one that’s ever made my physically sick.

Yep. Sugar Mills are pretty nasty too.
Irwindale is its own City. One of the problems we have here in Southern California is that there are literally dozens of independent "cities" which are islands within the City of LA, and which often have disfunctional city governments (some of them are elected by only a few hundred-- sometimes only a few dozen-- voters).
