American Blackout
NatGeo ^

Posted on 10/28/2013 4:09:39 PM PDT by Kartographer

American Blackout imagines the story of a national power failure in the United States caused by a cyberattack — told in real time, over 10 days, by those who kept filming on cameras and phones. You’ll learn what it means to be absolutely powerless. Gritty, visceral and totally immersive, see what it might take to survive from day one, and who would be left standing when the lights come back on.

Thanks.

Well, I guess I was deluded. I actually thought if you went to a website called “National Geographic Channel” then it would show programs from National Geographic.

Ain’t no money in that, though, if they just broadcast it free over the Internet, eh?

Eventually it might show up on Youtube...

Actually might happen in real life before it gets to Youtube!

For what it's worth, it'll rerun November 13 at 9 Eastern.

There was a fairly lengthy thread running earlier, and it pretty much got ragged on.

What was not factual about it? You saw that they were using archival footage from Katrina, a big fire in NJ after Sandy, Occupy Wall Street protests, etc., including Pres. Obama telling people to remain calm and to obey the instructions of government officials on the scene.

That doesn't mean much seeing how many FReepers rag on threads and articles they don't even read before commenting on! ;-)

Very good recap. Thank-you. I was thumbing on my iphone late into the night and this morning to read what others thought in an in-depth manner and what would have been better strategies. Yours is the best. I hope Google finds it soon.

I think your critique helps one think, what if,and then eliminate the really stupid ideas as dramatized on this show.

The birthing scene was really bizarre. Didn’t she at least want the privacy of the car?

I don’t think this show was that great, but it did stimulate some questions. At the end of the movie, the rural family retreated into the bunker when a small group of men raided the main house. This family was in effect out gunned it appeared in the scene. The father went out to confront the intruders, but he was apparently caught from behind at the end; not a good move.
It appears that as a small defensive unit, this family was vulnerable to being outnumbered. It would have been nice if they had like minded neighbors that could have provided assistance, perhaps setting up a hand held radio system before SHTF. But, if you are a small unit, you do need some types of other defensive measures such as booby traps, trip wires etc especially if you faced a SWAT invasion by rogue LEOs or other brigands.
Any ideas on perimeter defenses or good places for info?

I just checked to make sure I have one of those manual can openers (I do!). So I went onto Google and found this very helpful video on how to open a can up. I highly recommend this video even to people who are experienced on opening cans manually as the guy shows you want to do if you get in a jam.

Now I just have to get some cans of food in the house so that I'll have things to open! I almost wish the lights would go out for just a day or two so that I can practice on my survival skillz.

If the electric grid went down nation wide for 10 days you could stick a fork in us, it would be so bad, the planners/politicians (if not actually in cohoots with it) would be looking at making sure our international rivals were set back equally, like in the beginning of the novel The Stand...

Don't pay your electric bill, the electric company will make your practice very realistic. ;)

You might want to push this "How To Light A Candle" video to the top your your list. The can opener video won't do you much good after the lights go out unless you can see the computer screen so the first step is to light a candle.
