Did Anyone Watch American Blackout on NatGeo last night? (vanity)

What happens when major portions of the United States loses power? How will people cope? How will people die?

From this forum, I heard of this docudrama and set the DVR. I only made it 40 minutes in until I started hiding my head under the couch pillows and at the one hour mark, I fled the room where my husband was watching. He put it on hold for tonight, because he wants to know what happens. I will hear it second hand from him.

At first, from the timeline, 2006, I thought this was previously aired six years ago. But then they should excerpts of Obama calling for calm. It was clever how they made it cinema verite like the Blair Witch Project, and a compilation like they have done for their programs on the timeline of 9/11 from different vantage points.

I have read many excellent books on apocalyptic scenarios,e.g. One Minute After, Lights Out, and do enjoy the genre. But his show was too much for me. That idiot slicing into the can of peaches with a huge carving knife had me skidding away. Why is it always the canned peaches? Another novel I read, the girl was eating a can of peaches at a swapmeet, after when the government helicopters came in to herd everyone into a valley to massacre them. The scene with the long-haired boyfriend meeting in secret to give away food to the neighbors was so infuriating. I know who he voted for.

So I have scoured the web to see if anyone was at the internet water-cooler discussing this grid-down dramatization. I waited until the original posters came back to offer a wrap-up. If, I over-looked their post, I apologize.

I always remember the words of Forest Gump-Stupid is as Stupid does. And if that doesn’t work-Run Forest Run!

I believe in sheltering in place too.

I worry about fires. The show did have a lot of houses going up in flames due to candles and things being used.

Remember the looting and arson go together like peanut butter and jelly. If there is no Fire Department and no water and someone manages to set your house on fire you are pretty well screwed as far as sheltering in place. (I actually liked this plan better when I was in a highrise that was concrete).

My typical cul-de-sac suburban neighborhood strikes me as "adequate". If closed off it could begin to be somewhat defensible. Some of the entrances are obvious as to where you would close them, others are not so obvious. Probably several adjacent closed series of streets, about 8 blocks each, would be about right.

That’s a good idea, make your house look like a rat hole so people will leave it alone.

"I'm not saying kill all the stupid people

Heh. They'd take care of that if we'd only let them.

Its also a good idea to have a couple of small dogs with big ears. 24/7 warning system.

I saw it and I thought it was pretty scary. It seemed realistic from the point of "the power has failed" on. Whether or not the power WOULD fail like that due to some mysterious terrorist strike, well I kind of doubt it.

But once you let that go it all seemed pretty realistic. And therefore quite scary. I could easily survive 10 days in my house with plenty to eat and enough water to drink and flush judiciously. I think my plan would be to avoid going out. But -- that still leaves the roving bands of looters. There are some questionable types nearby my house, so things could get dicey. Of course I'm armed - but I have a natural aversion to killing people, even stupid, desperate people making bad choices out of fear and hunger. So I don't know how I would deal with some of the scenarios presented in the drama. Overall I enjoyed it and would recommend it.

The power can fail for a lot of reasons that are more likely than a terrorist attack too

I love the holiday season.

We have two manual can openers. They're easy to keep clean; I just run them through the dishwasher, and when the power is off, they still work. :)

Pick any episode of Bonanza and watch it, that is what life is like without electricity. Is that so bad?

I don’t know, it seems as though those spots were illuminated pretty well for one kerosene lamp.

I remember another book I read that had to do with a neighborhood closing itself off because of a pandemic. People in nice cars came by “shopping” for an empty house to squat in. The neighborhood vetted them for character and skills and would let the better ones stay. The protagonists were liberal vegetarians, but they did have firearms, and the wife wiled away the contagion sitting in a rocker reading novels.

How the heck do you watch it?

*************

Outside of a tv with the NGC channel I have no idea. The link I posted was to the
National Geographic website. The program would have been on their tv channel and
is scheduled again for Nov. 13 according to the link. I have no idea if your tv
supplier carries the NGC channel or not. You’ll have to look it up.

I’m thinking concertina wire and signs for Bible readings.
I once saw a docudrama about a pandemic, and the family made their way out of LA ( it would seem), dehydrated, hungry, aimless, but when they finally found a town that would have them, when they were safe and secure, they left, because they were required to attend church. Quell horrors!

I don’t see any connection between your post and mine. Are you saying people were stupid to help each other?
