The electoral map divides the country neatly into blue states and red states. But blue states include vast conservative stretches; and most red states harbor liberal enclaves, too. In recent years, as partisan polarization has grown, some political minorities in these disaffected areas have proposed a radical solution: state partition.
It has happened before. Maine, for instance, was once part of Massachusetts. And while none of the current movements really has a shot, the eleven instances mapped here (including that to grant the District of Columbia statehood) have at least attracted the support of elected officials.
What would happen if all of them succeeded? Each new state would get two senators and its share of electoral college votes. We ran the numbers and recalculated the 2012 presidential race.
In this bizarro United States, the GOP would have a structural advantage in the expanded Senate, and Barack Obama would have had a tighter fight against Mitt Romney in the electoral college (which he won, in reality, 332206).
If Republicans really want to screw with the electoral map, some argue they could break up Texas into five states according to the states terms of annexation. Democrats, meanwhile, can dream that Texas makes good on Governor Rick Perrys threat to secede from the union altogether.
Total Electoral Votes1
Obama 310
Romney 247
Senate
Democrats 60 Republicans 62

Colors are wrong. Red is Communist.
To bad we can’t get all the people in Michigan who are not from Detroit to line up with shovels. We could just push Detroit over to Canada.
Nah just dreaming. Wouldn’t want to get in a war with the Canadians.
Texas would love to kick the Austin libs out of the state.
I’ve been trying to restart the Toledo strip war and tricking Ohio into winning Detroit.
gosh you mean it would be so awful for us Republicans if this happened?
Thanks Dems! We know you always love to help us
New Mexico has to be the most politically misunderstood state of all. New Mexico can go either way in a Presidential election depending on if the Republican candidate is a good one or if the Republican candidate bothers to really campaign here. This state is not a lost cause, Romney didn’t want conservative support so he lost many of those votes, and there are many here. We have a fairly conservative (really conservative for here) Governor so we are not a blue state for the right candidate. We have so few electoral votes so I understand why we don’t get much attention from Republicans but when we do we can be persuaded, speaking for my state- I personally vote R even when I have to hold my nose/lessor of two thing.
All of the Red State capitals are blue.
Cheyenne Wyoming is Red.
Looks fine to me.
So the House would still have 435 members, while the Senate would swell to 122. Hmmmmmmm.
Absolutely—I’m from Farmington (Four Corners) area, and it’s as conservative as anyplace. But go to Taos, Santa Fe, etc., and it’s about six shades to the left of Bezerkley.
House is based on total population, so unchanged.
States have two senators each . Not going to bother counting the seceded new states, but that obviously works out to a total of 61 states.
And West Virginia was part of Virginia. (Virginia also claimed what is now Kentucky.)
Hey, Obama might get his 57 states after all! :)
please add me to this interesting ping list
FReegards,
Kevmo
only if they break off three libtard states
I never heard of any who want to except for TX and co and that would add to GOP states
And I think once the momentum started Western New York would be a new GOP state
And give them 10 Senators instead of 2. I bet 7 or 8 of those 10 would be Republicans.
I believe there’s a secessionist movement in Nevada, which would likely attach itself to Jefferson. Also, interior Texas has some secessionist sentiment against coastal Texas.
Alaska would probably secede entirely from the union.
You’re on it! Hope you find it interesting. Rest assured: this topic is heating up fast.
