I saw some interviews with federal employees following the shutdown. I noticed that the accents of the employees were Northern, I did not hear a Southern accent. While I only caught the accents of a few people, it made me wonder if the Democrats are stacking the federal jobs with liberal workers from the North.

I lived in Texas for a while back in the 80s and all the news broadcasters had northern accents. Seems that there are some careers where people actively seek to eliminate the accent.

In the real South, Marylanders are considered “border” people. Their allegiance is for them to determine.

My people were Kentucky, also border people. The same rule applies, though most all Kentuckians consider themselves Southern. Their state was officially neutral during the Unpleasantness.

We're both Marylanders. The federal payroll is stacked with libs from Montgomery and P.G. counties like they were worm-eaten cord wood. Once they infest the area, they're like cockroaches - you can never be rid of them. Electing a Republican administration (such as it is, circa 2013) is just the equivalent of taking a can of Bengal spray and some roach baits to them - you see less when you throw the light switch, but they still live in the walls. They're always there. Nothing but a meteor strike will ever dislodge those diseased vermin.

I would say that the DC based fed employees are mostly from around here (metro DC) and a smattering of people that transfer to work within the fed system from other places.

It’s been my experience that the engineers, the science types with a specific professional skill like geology and IT are usually white while the general employees and bureaucrat types that just punch a clock and push paperwork are usually minority.

There are a lot of contractors from up north because this area offers a good representation of the NE but with better weather. You can live much larger on a $50k salary in the DC area than you can anywhere north of the Mason Dixon line.

For the most part, the people I’ve run into from down south are hill staffers that leave after a period of time, active duty stationed at the various facilities and ex-mil types that stay for work.
