We’ve been dancing with frosts lately, and now there’s a freeze expected, although forecasters keep changing their minds about which night it will be. This morning was my best chance to clean up the garden, so I took it. I now have 2 grocery bags full of green tomatoes, and 2 bags full of half-ripe tomatoes. Some of the half-ripe ones are cracked or split, so I’m looking for recipes to use them in. I might just can them up as puree and ignore the color.

About 20 minutes after I got done, it turned gloomy and cold outside. It’s raining now. I think I came in just in time.

I tried to clean up my cucumber vine as well, after sucuming to that powdery mildew infestation and 3 frosts it finally looked dead. But the darn thing is resprouting again! At every leaf node there are new buds, some for leaves and some for flowers. It’s like the Energizer cucumber, keeps going and going and going . . .

I was hoping to get out to my land today, but it’s too cold to be out in the rain. Besides, I still have squash in the fridge that needs used before it spoils.

You’ll definitely have to process the split ones for some purpose. As someone discussed up thread, it’s likely that the could be used in chili with no problem.

I personally wrap the green tomatoes and let them ripen-it’s like an extension of the season.LOL

Time has come for settling in with a cup of hot tea after the garden chores instead of iced tea of summer. We are almost to the end of the garden season here too.

I just now got done dealing with the squash in the fridge. It’s been there long enough it was either use it today or throw it out, and I worked too hard growing it to throw it out! Came out to almost 10 cups of puree. I made a triple batch of squash pudding, and a triple batch of cobbler. I’m all squashed out, time to crash.
