My wife finally granted permission for my son to get a pet corn snake. I am shocked by all the people telling me that we are crazy let him have it. Do any of you have an exotic pet? Please tell me about it.

I had an Irish Setter as a young teenager. She was with me all the time, even when we slept. She was a great bird dog but unfortunately she was dumb as a brick.

I suppose a corn snake is pretty dumb, too. But those pheasants were a God-send to our table. Amen to Irish Setters.

My son had a ball python who he loved very much. The little guy was an escape artist and once he’d get out, it could takes days or weeks to find him again.

The snake actually did become attached to my son. If the kid wasn’t there, the snake didn’t eat.

They’re very clean and, in their own way, quite sweet.

Surprisingly, we all liked the little fella.

The only bad thing was that he was chronically dehydrated and this inhibited his ability to swallow. (Trips to the vet helped, but didn’t fix the issue.) So we’d end up with a choking snake about once a month. My son would have to fish the mouse out of this throat, then we’d have to let him rest and treat him for swelling for a few days. (We ended up fixing this by feeding him ‘pinkys’.)

Any animal can have medical problems.

What a dumb article. It looks like it was written by a 12-year old. Turtles carry semolina?! I think the author means salmonella. Yikes.

And the furry family pet in Riki Tiki Tavi was a mongoose, not a ferret. It is illegal to import mongooses to the US.

I had a corn snake when I was young. They’re very beautiful in coloring, mine got very used to being handled and was a nice pet. Used to let him around my neck and under my shirt while I was studying/doing homework, which drove my mother crazy.

Everybody would show up to watch him being fed. Even if they hated snakes, seeing him get the mouse fascinated them.

I don't see the point of having snakes. They don't display affection or learn commands. The only point of having a snake is to enjoy scaring people. Other than that, pointless and usually involves feeding mice to them. Not pleasant. I got bit once by a 5 ft. boa constrictor. NOT PLEASANT because it wouldn't let go. Finally freed myself by holding it (my arm) underwater. THAT REALLY SUCKED!

A parakeet is a better pet. They can get noisy but they CAN be taught to talk. I taught mine to say 'hello' when I was a kid. And his name, 'Opey'.

Ugh! Having been an owner and a breeder of ferrets, I can tell you this writer is misinformed on ferrets overall. While I do agree that ferrets are not the best pets for small children, they are fantastic pets for adolescent kids and with proper maintenance (like NOT bathing them), they don’t stink.

The BIGGEST challenges with ferrets are space and maintenance. You have to clean their living areas almost daily, depending on how many you have, and you must scoop their litter every day to prevent infestations and infections. They will destroy carpeting and wood if they want to get into something, so a large room stripped to the foundation with a lot of toys and tunnels is ideal.

Ferrets are wildly intelligent and are Houdinis in their own right. They live anywhere from 5-7 years depending on breeding and overall health. They are very affectionate, know their names very quickly, are litter trained (in general), and can provide hours of entertainment for little ones if properly monitored.

FWIW, if you have a ferret that bites, YOU are doing something wrong. Ferrets only bite out of fear. Play biting is not normal and should be disciplined out of them from the get-go.

We have rats, and they’re the most adorable, loveable pets we’ve ever had. We had a large rat we named “Eeyore,” and the kids still talk about him after he’s been gone six years now.

I always wanted a ferret, but investigating them, I realize they’re more trouble than they’re worth.

Want to get a dog or cat? Go to your local SPCA - they have tons of animals that will be destroyed if not adopted out.

And please...spay and neuter your pets. There are so many cats that no kill shelters are turning them away.
