He is a passionate campaigner on green issues, and now Jeremy Irons has backed a campaign to ban lorries from the quaint Oxfordshire town where he lives.

The Oscar–winning actor has thrown his weight behind an action group to prevent HGVs using the narrow streets of Watlington as a rat-run between the M40 and M4.

The market town—reputedly the smallest in the country—is regularly snarled up with lorries whose drivers, looking for a shortcut between Oxford and Reading, are directed there by their satnavs. …

I'm not sure you understand his argument. He wants to limit the number of trucks that are in transit.

The U.S. has truck routes too, I don't see the big deal . . . .

Like this one?

Ordinarily I would just write this off as another NIMBY who deserves all he gets. However, I have travelled through that town far too often by car and know that it is bad enough in that car and there is no real way round it. So even though I don't live near there I would go along with him this time.

Build a bypass road. Pay for it. Problem solved in the manner it usually is in the US. (Except for the pay part).

I see his problem, and it’s probably a recent phenomena because of the satnavs.

...a passionate campaigner on green issues...

An idiot. Ban trucks from taking a shortcut that saves fuel? How do you square that buddy?

Ban trucks from local deliveries? Oh, yeah, lets use smaller vehicles that are much less fuel efficient per ton-mile at moving cargo. So that in order to get X tons of goods in, you make even more trips and burn more fuel...

Oh, I'm sorry greenies - am I letting facts, physics, and engineering get in the way of your emotional feel-good advocacy?

Local streets around here have signs banning through trucks. The only reason huge box trucks or semis can drive in is to deliver to a house. We live in a blue collar lower middle class neighborhood. The regulations in more hi tone neighborhoods are stricter.

If however a major accident happens on the main drag, a few blocks away the big rigs and everyone else is routed down my block. We know if there has been a nasty crash if the traffic gets heavy.

No, I just don't think you understand narrow streets.

Lorries are not in keeping with the rustic aesthetic.

"If following the herd is your thing, go for it."

Something you actually know a lot about.

Well, I’ve lived in the narrow streets of Manhattan (double and triple parking, garbage trucks, delivery trucks, buses and fire engines thundering through). So,I don’t feel a bit sorry for Boris Karloff...er, I mean Jeremy Irons.

GPS systems are directing lorries through poor Mr. Irons’ neighborhood. That’s the problem - according to the article and several commenters. Personally, I think Mr. Irons should be spending his time trying to teach his son Max to act rather than getting involved in lorry disputes. But that’s just me.

They just need a few of these:

Trucks making local deliveries are welcome. Trucks cutting through town, not so much.
