Outspoken Lesbian Minister Promoted to Dean of Vanderbilt Divinity School

A divinity school in Tennessee has installed an openly homosexual clergywoman as the school’s new dean.

Vanderbilt Divinity School (VDS), located in Nashville, Tennessee, has developed a reputation for progressive policies and teachings. An article last week in Nashville Scene described the institution as a “liberal oasis” and “a bastion of the religious left” where scholars tend to “challenge rather than uphold orthodoxy.”

In keeping with these beliefs, the school has officially appointed Emilie Townes as the 16th dean of the school. Not only is Townes an ordained American Baptist clergywoman, but she is also an overt homosexual.

Townes’ liberal stance on social issues have earned her a profile on The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Religious Archives Network. In a 2012 article Townes wrote for The Huffington Post, she describes her “marriage” with her homosexual partner.

“[My partner and I] are both clear that we do not to conform to the standard text of marriage,” Townes wrote, “but we want to find ways to breath new air and life into what it means to be married not only by the state, but even more so in the eyes of the Holy Spirit.”

“As a Christian social ethicist with womanist leanings,” she continues, “I am clear that the Bible says precious little about same sex relationships, though it appears to have a bit more to say about acts but even that is muddled. I am also clear that although God judges our acts, God does so out of love and mercy and would much rather spend holy time applauding our attempts at humanity than smiting our behavior.”

Townes’ homosexual partner, Laurel Schneider, also joined the VDS faculty this year. Schneider is now a professor of religious studies.

Those messages are only ‘muddled’ to those who are willfully ignoring them generally, but I would guess especially in this case.

And people wonder why I’m not impressed when they tell me they have studied at some divinity or theological school or have a degree from one.

I was recently behind a car that had democrat and atheist bumper stickers on it, one of which said, "If you want a country run by religion, move to Iran" Yet, it also had stickers proclaiming the owner's loyalty to Notre Dame.

Cornelius Vanderbilt helped start Vanderbilt with a $1 million dollar gift in 1873 when that became the LARGEST single charitable gift in US History. This was inspired by his wife’s cousin, Methodist Bishop Holland N. McTyeire of Nashville, who would select the site and establish the University. For the first 40 years until 1914, Vanderbilt operated under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopalian Church that Bishop McTyeire was a member of.

All of these above are rotating rapidly in their graves.

Of course, Vanderbilt U., has become anti-values for multiple years now. Their previous offense was to ban a student Christian organization because its bylaws required the LEADERS to be practicing Christians. The University deemed this to be against their ‘inclusivity’ regulations.

Sorry, the church of Bishop Holland N. McTyeire should be specified as the Methodist Episcopal Church not the Methodist Episcopalian Church.

And in fairness similar stories can be told of many of the private universities from Harvard on. The tendency of educrats seems to be an invincible drift towards the left unless severely controlled. Federal funds do nothing but encourage this trend.

I would predict that if Presiden Eisenhower were to give his famed departing speech today, this past USMA graduate and past President of Columbia University would be warning us of the Educational-Political Complex, either with the Military-Industrial or instead of!

“As a Vanderbilt grad (1982) I have been terribly embarrassed as to the direction of my alma matter in the last 20 years . . .”

I feel the same way about the University of Virginia. We now have a President whose academic credentials include coauthoring a study with her friend Elizabeth Warren. Things were so bad she was actually fired a little over a year ago. The faculty, students, and national media screamed and the governing board caved under the pressure so she was put back in charge. Thomas Jefferson’s once great University has quickly become another progressive indoctrination camp funded by the taxpayer.

The saddest thing about the firing episode was the way Virginia’s Republican governor refused to back the board. Then again why should I expect any GOP politician to stand up to the tyranny of the left.

Lesbian and minister shouldn’t be in the same sentence.

How about "One should minister to a lesbian to encourage her to repent and return to a righteous life"?

“we want to find ways to breath new air and life into what it means to be married not only by the state, but even more so in the eyes of the Holy Spirit.”

God isn’t looking for anyone to breath “new air and life” into “what it means to be married”.

Smash the patriarchy. Smash monogamy. Smash smash smash.

That’s feminist/socialist/hedonist rhetoric in summation.
