Where's Craig Kimbrel? Not in the game (Oct. Baseball Live Thread)
ESPN ^ | October 8, 2013 | David Schoenfield

Posted on 10/08/2013 10:04:36 AM PDT by campaignPete R-CT

Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.

Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....

Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."

The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.

The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.

But what’s the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesn’t even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.

So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.

... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.

This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...

Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.

October is not the regular season.

Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.

He ended up getting none.

Has there ever been a pickoff to end a WS game? Elias sports bureau needs to get on the case. Another fun finish to a game.

The 1926 WS ended with Babe Ruth getting caught stealing second in a 1-run game. Ruth was a horrible base stealer but kept trying it. I think he was caught about 50% of the time.

with Berry in RF and Nava in LF ... (after lackey enters), does Berry catch that 9th inning fly by Craig? I think so.

Getting picked off of first while being down two runs in the bottom of the ninth with two outs is so wong.

Somebody needs to be running laps in the outfield after the game.

I didn’t watch a second of the game; didn’t watch any Pawts either and they won. That’s the new strategy, I won’t watch.

BOS should have either won the Series tonight or be up 3-1. Oh well, best 2/3 now.

Off to sniff some glue and shotgun beers. Ciao!

Kolten Wong gets picked off at first, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth... with Beltran at the plate. Wow.

Nice win for the Red Sox!! Tonight's win assures a Game 6 at Fenway!

Seeing Kolten Wong in the game reminded me that in 2010 we saw Kolten play in the Cape Cod League All-Star game, held at Fenway Park. How far Kolten has gone up the rungs of baseball. In 2010 he's in the Cape Cod League... Now he's playing for the Cardinals in the World Series.

Too bad Naples couldn’t play 3rd base.

They also should have had him catch a few games during the later part of the season, especially when it was becoming apparent that BOS was going to the playoffs; the pitchers would have had some familiarity with him and vice versa.

That’s our lucky strategy now... You are not allowed to watch any more WS games. The Red Sox will definitely win then... ;-)

All of these Sox/Cards games have been nerve wracking. This definitely isn’t 2004....

The Red Sox scouting report was responsible for the Wong pick-off. Wong hops and leans toward the next base when he takes his initial lead.

Makes it easy to pick him off. Wong does his bunny rabbit routine then the pitcher throws over. bye bye Wong. I'll bet he changes his routine now. Paying attention to your oppenent's 'indicators' could lead to wins. :-)

Once again, Beltran is left standing at the plate with the bat on his shoulder..

” In 2010 he’s in the Cape Cod League... “

I wasn’t aware of that. I’ve never seen the CC League play but I have a son-in-law and grandson who are big fans.

The odds of making it to MLB are so tough and they all work so hard——nice to see.

If I could choose a Fan Favorite Player in the World Series, it would be Big Papi. As you know, I have no emotional attachment to either team in this WS. David Ortiz is an amazing player to watch simply for the sheer joy of baseball.

Big Papi's powerhouse bat is well documented. I've been particularly impressed watching Ortiz play defense at 1B while in STL. He is not only capable, but he obviously enjoys himself. The numerous glimpses of him exchanging humorous banter with opponent runners on base is refreshing. His ebullient challenge to his teammates from 2B last night was exhilarating. His team leader pow wow in the dugout further challenged his colleagues.

David Ortiz is a giant who clearly loves the game of baseball, and this baseball fan chooses Big Papi as the Fan Favorite Player of the 2013 World Series.
