Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.
Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....
Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."
The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.
The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.
But whats the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesnt even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.
So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.
... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.
This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...
Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.
October is not the regular season.
Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.
He ended up getting none.

Effing b/s as any Bahstonian would concur!
David Ross would've made that play correctly, and Craig would've been out. I want Saltalamacchia off the Red Sox in 2014.
Tim Wakefield and Tom Caron on the NESN post-game show are incredulous that Brandon Workman batted in the 9th while Napoli sat on the bench. What a f***ed up game by the Red Sox...
I just came across an article from yesterday titled “Saltalamacchia turns page after miscues”. Nope!
PS Who is the deep throat (lol) of this thread?
Can we start a new one? I would love to but I am one of Eunice’s kids!
Well he should have just stayed there on the ground on his stomach and watched Craig score — he had a good seat.
Yep, deja vu for him.
Looking ahead, the Red Sox starters should be,
Game 4 Buchholz
Game 5 Lester
Game 6 Lackey
Game 7 Lester
*dogears thread*
If BOS doesn’t start Ross the rest of the way, they deserve to lose.
Saltalamacchia hit his ceiling and along with Drew are automatic outs.
Agree Ross should get the start.
He is.
Boston Red Sox Lineup:
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Daniel Nava RF (Victorino out, back tightness)
Dustin Pedroia 2B
David Ortiz 1B
Jonny Gomes LF
Xander Bogaerts 3B
Stephen Drew SS
David Ross C
Clay Buchholz P
So glad to see Ross catching tonight! Salty needs a “rest”...
“Salty needs a rest...”
He’s spent. This is the most he’s ever played in a season.
Ross is the MUCH better catcher, offensively and defensively.
Different sport, but...:
Here we go... Joe and Timmy have resumed cheer leading for their beloved Cardinals...
Here we go.
“Joe and Timmy have resumed cheer leading for their beloved Cardinals...”
Kind of like Pavlov’s dogs...
“I agree... Ross is obviously the better catcher by far.”
Yes.
I see Nava for Victorino today.
And they’re off...not watching though.
Nava’s hitting earned himself start today.
Victorino - back spasms.
